    UL is currently seeking a motivated Engineer for our Life & Health medical device evaluation and testing in one of the following offices Northbrook, IL office. The current position is for an Electrical Safety and Compliance Engineer. It will include hands-on laboratory engineering that requires testing products for fire, electrical, and mechanical hazards, which can sometimes result in catastrophic failures.  This position provides a small business feel, but with all of the support, resources and other benefits of a large corporation.

     

     An Engineer for the Life & Health Sciences industry will manage and execute compliance engineering safety investigations for a wide variety of cutting edge medical products, laboratory equipment, and other devices. Work will include analyzing project scope, determining project specifications, designing testing programs, and examining samples for compliance with global UL safety requirements. Compile safety reports for clients and issue authorization to apply the UL mark. Engineers should be prepared for work in a laboratory environment, with hands on work in determining the safety of products. Preferred candidate will also work to grow business and laboratory needs in the area and local office.

    Responsibilities

    • Determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
    • Develops a partnership with clients to communicate and work through technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Partners with client to address client concerns and to resolve client issues.
    • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Is familiar with applicable standards, company manuals and appropriate technical literature. Coordinates laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants, and establishing completion dates. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler and/or lab technician of record and/or Reviewer of record as assigned.
    • Candidate may also help to design and build local laboratories capabilities. Develop and coordinate laboratory activities such as scheduling, reviewing work of laboratory work, and analyze test program for adequacy and sequence. Assist in the development of UL laboratory requirements, special laboratory test methods, and test equipment.
    • Maintain a proactive approach in keeping up to date with changes and revisions to existing standards and regulations as well as new standards. Assists in the development of UL requirements. Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment. Preferred candidate may work cross-functionally with local sales to grow business presence and promote and explain the benefits of UL to new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Helps to fosters and ensure effective workflow. Typically supports local members of a team, but travel for projects or internal meetings may be necessary.
    • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.

    Qualifications

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Biomedical Engineering or related field
    • Ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong communication skills and ability to interact and connect with customers
    • Proven ability to be innovative and creative
    • Desire to work in a team environmentAbility to work independently without supervision.
    • Comfortable in laboratory environments performing hands-on engineering
    • Excellent interpersonal skills
    • Able to provide unique solutions to complex problems
