    Under general direction, performs engineering work in Research and Development and Energy Systems & eMobility segment including design, product characteristics and the documentation necessary to produce and reproduce testing standards. Assists in conducting studies and analysis to determine the feasibility of various engineering approaches. Defines concepts and criteria to resolve major problems in current programs or approaches. Plans and conducts experiments to measure the body of scientific knowledge on topics related to hazard based safety engineering. Projects require substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art engineering principals and theories, and uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of research based problems.


    • Identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of the aligned categories.
    • Applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.
    • Analyzes product data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions, and evaluates technical specifications and factors related to process or design objectives.
    • Stays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, and attending academic conferences.
    • Plan, design and complete initial and follow-up procedures as needed to test and validate results.
    • Independently determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include frequent travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
    • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existingservices. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Acts to address client concerns and to resolve complex client issues. Provides technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
    • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Determines areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications, and notifies client.

    • Performs other duties as directed.


    • University Degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics or other related technology discipline plus generally zero to two years of direct related work experience.
    • Demonstrated general knowledge of engineering disciplines. Demonstrated ability to maintain engineering based academic and applied knowledge and skills.
    • Ability to collaborate with peers, and work directly with Research Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finish. 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to interface with clients directly and effectively.
    • Self-starter, quick learner, and eager to be hands-on.
