    Under general direction, performs engineering work in Research including project design, hazard identification, product safety considerations, and the documentation necessary to produce and reproduce testing standards. Individual will work in a team environment.

    • Assist in conducting studies and analysis to determine the feasibility of various engineering approaches.
    • Help to define concepts and criteria to resolve major problems in current programs or approaches.
    • Participate in the planning and conducting of experiments to measure the body of scientific knowledge on topics related to hazard based safety engineering.

    Projects require substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art engineering principals and theories, and uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of research based problems.


    • Identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of the aligned categories.
    • Applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.
    • Analyzes product data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions, and evaluates technical specifications and factors related to process or design objectives.
    • Stays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, and attending academic conferences.
    • Plan, design and complete initial and follow-up procedures as needed to test and validate results.
    • Performs other duties as directed.


    • University Degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics or other related technology discipline plus generally two years of direct related work experience. Master's Degree preferred.
    • Demonstrated general knowledge of engineering disciplines. Demonstrated ability to maintain engineering based academic and applied knowledge and skills.
    • Ability to collaborate with peers, and work directly with Research Engineers, Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finish.  Willingness to work hands on in the lab.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Ability to interface with clients directly and effectively.
    • Self-starter, quick learner, and eager to be hands-on.  Creativity and curiosity are personal attributes which lead to success in this position.
