Exciting growth opportunity within our Smart Meter team in the RTP, NC area! Smart Meters is part of our Product Safety and Verification Services business.


Utilize your project handling skills! Work within a customer-friendly, focused, high-performing, and devoted team to help our smart meter clients meet their world-wide compliance needs as quickly and easily as possible. This is a new growth opportunity within UL where assistance is needed to help develop new test requirements and test methods (data sheets), identify and interpret relevant compliance Standards, develop and utilize quoting tools, seek business development and sales opportunities to help grow the business, and provide ideas for continuous improvement.  Your job will be to:

  • Determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and determine project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
  • Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follow up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Act to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services.
  • Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Is familiar with applicable standards, company manuals and appropriate technical literature. Examine samples for compliance with UL requirements and notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
  • Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and engineering assistants, and establishing completion dates. Coordinate administrative aspects of project management. May serve as Project Handler of record and/or Reviewer of record as assigned.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Prepare Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages.
  • Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Assist in the development of UL requirements. Assists in developing special test methods and test equipment. Analyze test program for adequacy and sequence. May coordinate and/or perform File Reviews, as directed. May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows.


This role requires strong technical skills, customer service, communication skills and attention to detail and is an opportunity to positively impact the UL Mission.

This role is located in Research Triangle Park, NC and reports to the Engineering Leader.

To succeed in this role, you should:

  • Have a University Degree, preferably in Electrical Engineering.
  • No experience required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory testing equipment and techniques related to testing of electrical products.
  • Experience with ANSI and IEC based Standards is desirable.
  • Experience with power distribution products, power supplies, circuit boards, and communication circuits is a plus
  • Have a high sense of responsibility and commitment along with the ability to work independently.
  • Ability and desire to work well within a team environment.
  • Sense of urgency with good communication skills.
  • Forward-thinking skills to help drive and grow a new business is a plus.
  • A process-improvement mindset.
  • Computer-savvy skills to help automate reports and data sheets is a plus.
