UL is currently seeking a motivated experienced Engineer for our Life & Health team in Fremont, CA. The engineer will conduct evaluations and testing of medical devices. The current position is for an Electrical Safety and Compliance Engineer. This position provides a small business feel, but with all of the support, resources and other benefits of a large corporation. It will include hands-on laboratory engineering that requires testing products for fire, electrical, and mechanical hazards, which can sometimes result in catastrophic failures.

Under general supervision, the Staff Engineer will manage and execute engineering safety investigations for a wide variety of cutting edge medical products, laboratory equipment, and other devices. Complete investigations by analyzing project scope, determining project specifications, designing testing programs, and examining samples for compliance with global UL safety requirements. Compile safety reports for clients and issue authorization to apply the UL mark. Engineers may also assist in the development of UL requirements, test methods, or test equipment. Project engineers should also be prepared for work in a laboratory environment, with hands on work in determining the safety of products. Preferred candidate will also work to grow business and laboratory needs in the area and local office.

Determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction, including mechanical drawings and electrical schematics. Projects may include travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.

  • Preferred candidate will work cross-functionally with local sales to grow business presence and promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follows up on contacts from clients. Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. Helps to fosters and ensure effective workflow. Typically supports local members of a team, but may be required to travel.
  • Establishes appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. Is familiar with applicable UL and other standards, company manuals and appropriate technical literature.
  • Evaluate customer products for compliance with UL requirements, and notifies client of any areas in which the product is not in compliance or of any changes in project scope or specifications.
  • Candidate will also help to design and build local laboratories capabilities. Develop and coordinate laboratory activities such as scheduling, reviewing work of laboratory work, and analyze test program for adequacy and sequence. Assist in the development of UL laboratory requirements, special laboratory test methods, and test equipment.
  • Maintain a proactive approach in keeping up to date with changes and revisions to existing standards and regulations as well as new standards. Provides leadership and technical advice on special projects. May provide direction with the Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer for specific product categories. Represents UL on technical committees of national and/or international organizations.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.

Qualifications

University Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program plus directly related work experience. Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline. Working knowledge of conformity standards in use in areas of expertise. Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new, or unusual products. Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
