PDE Manager for Appliances, reporting to the PDE Director of AHL PDEs
Responsible for the administration and management oversight of a team of Appliance PDEs, including the development, monitoring and implementation of operating plans, goals and budgets.
Drives consistency, integrity and engineering quality in the establishment and application of UL product safety certification and performance requirements that are applied by staff located at all UL offices and affiliates.
Develops to implementation and maintains consistent and technically appropriate certification requirements in Standards (UL and other US, international and regional) and other standard specific ancillary documents to provide for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL’s product certification services.
Collaborates effectively with internal and external standardization stakeholders to achieve scientifically and technically sound requirements / practices consistent with UL’s Mission and business interests. To do so requires domestic and international travel.
Develops and/or advises on the development of technical training content for internal and external stakeholders. Routinely meets with global technical staff to provide updates and share knowledge of technical requirements, procedures, compliance records / tools, etc. Presents technical content to standardization, industry, professional and other organizations.
Is a Qualified Reviewer for determining compliance with the assigned standard(s). Is the technical lead for determining the feasibility of conformity assessment of new and innovative products, developing / identifying appropriate certification requirements in accordance with UL conformity assessment policies and procedures.
Uses the Collaborative Standards Development system (CSDS) tool and other stakeholder fora to determine appropriate certification maintenance actions needed as the result of standard revisions.
Collaborates with the responsible laboratory and engineering operations staff to determine any necessary equipment and skills needed resulting from the changes to the standard.
Provides subject matter expertise and general technical support to UL engineering and laboratory operations, field operations, market surveillance and business development initiatives.
Performs other duties as directed.

University degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an accredited program or related field plus directly related electrical engineering experience.
Working knowledge of the relevant UL, IEC, government and industry appliance standards, installation codes, regulations and guidelines. Includes working knowledge of Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) principles with a demonstrated ability to apply these to complex, new and innovative products.
Demonstrated experience as an effective communicator and as an influencer who obtains results in external and internal cross-functional committees and groups.
Working knowledge of programmable electronic hardware design of internet-connected products and the network / communication platforms on which they run.
Working knowledge of appliance industry trends, technical issues, needs and opportunities.
Working knowledge of UL’s Engineering Operations, Follow-up Services and Standards development processes, including the technical vocabulary common to appliances.
