Reporting to the Global PR & Social Media Manager, this position is focused on the development and management of communications to support the strategic objectives of UL’s Commercial & Industrial (C&I) Business Unit. The Communications Specialist III – Public Relations and Social Media will, with guidance, develop, manage and execute on social media and editorial/public relations tasks to support strategic communications for all divisions and service lines for C&I. This role requires a mix of editorial and project management skills, along with the communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships across functional roles and business divisions globally.

 

The ideal candidate will be an inquisitive learner who possesses excellent editorial and communication skills. This candidate will have experience in creating content (digital/editorial) for a diverse range of audiences and is an enthusiastic adopter and user of digital communications technology (including social media channels). The candidate will be skilled at communicating with colleagues across functions and demonstrates the ability to ask questions, solve problems and – with direction  –  to bring tasks to completion. This role will be required to review and edit communications copy to ensure consistency of UL brand messaging, positioning, and value proposition, and to support regional marketing initiatives while ensuring tactics are consistently employed within brand and strategy guidelines. Additionally, this candidate will be interested in and keep abreast of best practices and communications industry trends, in order to best support the C&I marketing and business strategy.

Responsibilities

Social Media

  • Manage workflow of inbound social publishing request
  • Support a social media publishing calendar to ensure balance of messaging across divisions and channels
  • With direction, draft and publish outbound posts through 8-10 social channels as dictated by division marketers’ campaign needs and by C&I publishing calendar
  • As necessary, suggest posts to other UL channels (UL enterprise, division-level)
  • With direction, use social media best practices to craft post language, use appropriate hashtags, and apply knowledge of audience to achieve engagement
  • Support social listening and reporting initiatives for stakeholders
  • Assist with crafting, executing, expensing and analyzing paid social media campaigns

Public / Media Relations / Content Development

  • Manage workflow of inbound public relations, news release, and editorial requests from divisional marketers through review and publication
  • With direction, apply editorial knowledge to draft content including contributed articles, blog posts and news announcements
  • With direction, collaborate with colleagues in UL’s corporate marketing team as needed to support joint editorial opportunities and announcements
  • As needed and with direction, collaborate with C&I’s central marketing support team on content strategy and development projects
  • With direction, support requests for interviews and media engagement for C&I subject matter experts
  • Maintain database of experts’ headshots/bios

Qualifications

  • BS/BA degree (preferably in a liberal arts discipline, public relations, or marketing), or equivalent experience
  • At least two years of professional experience (ideally in a communications-related role)
  • Demonstrated ability to engage appropriately with different teams and roles inside a professional organization (ideally, experience in a global organization)
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media and other digital publishing channels appropriately
  • Ability to understand and translate technical and scientific topics into digestible language in a variety of formats
  • Top-notch communication skills: presentation, verbal, writing, editing
  • Ability to engage in multiple projects while delivering high-quality output and maintaining a great attention to detail and customer service
  • Values innovation and flexibility; proactive, motivated and a self-starter
  • Think strategically, execute programs against timelines and meet commitments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience managing and/or using a wide array of internal communication tools
