Responsibilities

Under supervision, with assigned mentors in the lab, assists in the completion of sample preparation, test set-up, testing, and documentation.

 

Assists lab team in determining project scope, developing a preliminary plan of testing, and verifying project specifications such as test time and sample requirements.

  • Assists the laboratory team with various projects or special tasks as needed such as building and/or adapting laboratory setup and test equipment for laboratory tests, examining test samples, reading measuring instruments and reviewing test data with supervisor or other laboratory professionals.
  • Assists in recording observed or calculated data on appropriate data sheets and in preparing reports, typing documents, and filing.  May be required to create customer letters.
  • Operates designated machines that may include furnaces, ovens, hydraulic equipment, electrical test equipment, temperature measuring devices, tensile testers, analytical balances, meters, hand tools, and special laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Assists with assembling and/or disassembling test setups as well as conducting standardized tests.
  • May read and interpret blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and operational instructions.
  • Assists laboratory operations in the conduct of tests and preparation of data and coordinates other aspects of project management as directed.
  • Assists in communication with engineers to discuss technical issues, explain test procedures and requirements, and negotiate completion date.
  • Coordinates laboratory activities by reviewing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing lab work engineering project handlers.
  • Communicates project status and results to engineers.
  • Provides support to engineering and laboratory operations for client projects and the associated product investigations.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

Some University education in Mechanical Engineering.

  • No other work experience required, but previous Laboratory/Engineering internship helpful.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as probability, statistics, trigonometry, or plane and solid geometry in practical situations.
  • Ability to compose routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to present standard information and respond to questions from individuals or small groups of internal or external clients.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operations, maintenance and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to understand and follow detailed written and/or oral instructions and to resolve problems involving a few variables in standardized situations where specific decision-making guidelines exist.
  • Ability to work with computers, email, word documents, and spreadsheets.
