Responsibilities

 

Under minimal supervision, plans, analyzes, and designs the enterprise technical architecture. Ensures technical and business requirements are met. Assesses new products, methods, technologies, and appropriate IT standards across multiple operating systems, hardware platforms, and applications. Communicates with all levels of the organization on global architectural issues. Recommends innovative approaches to leverage new and existing hardware, software, and other technologies as necessary. Identifies, researches, and designs software and supporting infrastructure that provides services to UL's staff and clients worldwide.

  • Develops business-focused requirements for the technical architecture, evaluates alternative technologies, and recommends appropriate solutions that fit current enterprise architecture. Determines optimal mix of key service levels in technical designs. Defines key aspects of architecture and design (e.g. scalability, availability, manageability, security, performance).
  • Evaluates new technologies and determines how they could be used or applied in the delivery of IT Services. Communicates cost effectiveness of migration or deployment.
  • Ensures a consistent and standardized environment for computing resources that will ensure cost effective application delivery for the enterprise.
  • Evaluates service level agreements for business and quality of service (QoS) elements when designing solutions (i.e. security, performance, reliability, availability, manageability, etc.).
  • Advises Business/IT management on IT enterprise architecture issues. Participates in the IT Standards, IT Performance, and Capacity Management processes.
  • Maintains and applies current knowledge of information technology. Researches new and emerging technologies through industry journals, conferences, and various information sources such as Gartner, Meta, etc. to help determine if and how they can be used to add value to the business.
  • Leads projects with UL IT managers to develop and maintain three-year technology roadmaps in all technology areas and with UL Application and Information Management. Ensures the technology infrastructure and direction meets the current and forecasted needs of the application portfolio.
  • Engages all external service providers in the planning and provision of system resource requirements.
  • Documents current state architecture and develops future state vision and roadmap in collaboration with business and IT colleagues. 

Qualifications

University Degree in Computer Science or a related discipline plus generally ten years of direct related experience. Detailed knowledge of industry trends and best-practices for computing infrastructure and software development. Operational knowledge of service-level metrics and tools used to measure these metrics. Working knowledge of project lifecycle methodology. Detailed knowledge in the following: agile methodologies, database design, business analysis, systems analysis, solution architecture, software patterns, object-oriented design, n-tier application design, services oriented architecture and service development. Background in development with .Net, Java, or Ruby/Rails helpful. Project/Program management experience preferred. Excellent written and oral communication skills required. Presentation and meeting facilitation skills required.
