UL is looking for an exceptional Senior Litigation Counsel to join the Legal Department in Northbrook. Under the direction of the Vice President of IP & Litigation, the Senior Litigation Counsel will be a well-rounded litigator responsible for management of litigation matters for the UL family of companies, advising on pre-litigation matters, and business counseling for compliance as well as risk mitigation. Subject matter may include employment, commercial and contract disputes, antitrust and trade regulation, product liability, personal injury, and other areas.

Responsibilities

  • Recommends the most effective strategy for defense or prosecution in litigation and maintains an awareness of proposed and existing legislation and evolving trends in local, national and international statutes and laws.
  • Assesses the likelihood and magnitude of risk in antitrust, commercial and contract disputes, product liability, personal injury, employment law and other subject matters and prepares recommendations to reduce the liability exposure of the UL family of companies. Conducts legal research as needed.
  • Reviews internal manuals and policies, and public-facing statements, press releases, marketing materials, and contracts from a legal standpoint to mitigate risk.
  • Partners with Internal Audit, Ethics & Compliance, and Conformity Assessment Program Office departments on investigations and reviews into internal policy, external scheme, and regulatory compliance matters.
  • Provides recommendations for corrective action when areas of non-compliance with local, national and international statutes and laws are brought to the attention of the Legal Department.
  • Directly manages and/or supervises outside counsel.  
  • Collaborates with paralegals and technical specialist on preparing and responding to discovery requests.
  • Prepares UL staff for depositions and trial; attend trials, mediations, arbitrations and depositions. 
  • Advises HR in creating and maintaining workplace policies and procedures that are in compliance with country, federal, state and local employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, Occupation Health and Safety Act, Family Medical Leave Act and worker’s compensation law.
  • Represents the UL family of companies on a variety of employee-related matters, which may include worker’s compensation, termination of employment, sexual harassment, employee agreements, workplace safety, wage and overtime standards, privacy rights, discrimination and employee benefits.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Qualifications

  • University Degree, Juris Doctorate and Bar membership in good standing, with at least five to seven years of experience as a civil litigation attorney
  • Law firm experience required, in-house experience preferred
  • Experience in the following legal areas strongly preferred: employment; product liability; commercial and contract disputes; antitrust and trade regulation; personal injury
  • Experience in taking and defending depositions, preparing witnesses, and attending hearings and trials
  • Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to communicate in a diplomatic and influential manner with employees at all levels
  • Ability to use sound judgment, provide guidance, and make key decisions in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to contribute as a team player and work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and business leaders to fulfill and advance company strategy
  • Ability to multi-task and organize work flow independently in response to the company's strategic priorities and objectives
