UL is currently seeking a motivated Senior Project Engineer for our HVAC/Combustion Operations Team. In this role, you will have the opportunity to be innovative and creative to further grow this area of UL’s business.  A successful Senior Project Engineer will closely work with Manufacturers to enable rapid entry of safe and high performing products into the global marketplace.

Our HVAC/Combustion Senior Project Engineer will work directly with big HVAC customers, reviewing products construction, setting up and performing tests within our families of Labs or at Client’s facilities, coordinating with Customers the resolution of technical issues and developing evaluation records.  Some of the types of products investigated are:

  • Burner management systems
  • Burner controls systems
  • Burner controls
  • Flame sensors
  • Temperature-limit controls
  • Fuel/air ratio controllers
  • Temperature-sensing devices




  • Independently determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
  • Initiates communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services.
  • Communicates with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements.
  • Determines areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications, and notifies client.
  • Coordinates complex laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians and by establishing completion dates. Coordinates administrative aspects of project management.
  • Serves as Project Handler of record and signs as Reviewer of record as assigned.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Resolves complex engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
  • Directs and reviews work of assigned staff. Trains office, field, and/or laboratory staff and entry level engineers. Provides technical assistance in several product categories, operations or systems to laboratory and/or field staff.
  • Performs other duties as directed.



  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical preferred)
  • +8 years of directly related work experience
  • Experience working with the above mentioned products preferred 
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with customers
  • Expertise with software and/or auditing preferred
  • Ability to troubleshoot effectively
  • Dynamic self-starter
