We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards AHL Program Manager at UL Standards and Engagement.


The Standards Program Manager in Appliances, HVAC, and Lighting (AHL), plans and manages assigned standards and programs for AHL to accomplish strategic and operational goals that advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement. Responsible for leading and directly supervising a team of Project Managers and Technical Committee (TC) Chairs and may serve as a TC Chair. The Standards Program Manager provides expertise and leadership to internal and external stakeholders related to the different technical landscape and regulatory environments in both the USA and Canada.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards AHL Program Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL Standards and Engagement as you:

  • Drive the consensus standards development process to technologies related to appliances, consumer products, personal flotation devices, HVAC systems, and lighting, as well as outcomes.
  • Drive the adoption of safety standards and requirements in all relevant end-product and service standards, the incorporation of up-to-date referenced standards, and the use of UL Standards’ publications.
  • Manage and lead team in the fulfillment of their responsibilities and their individual career growth.
  • Cultivate and maintain an active line of communications with key stakeholders, and an open line of communication with all stakeholders in assigned area(s) of responsibility in support of the consensus standards development process.
  • Represent UL Standards & Engagement on committees associated with prioritized technical issues, including Technical Harmonization Committees and Code development panels.
  • Monitor technical trends, issues, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise and responsibility and applies to programs in keeping with Standards strategy
  • Develop and implement technical program strategic plans, processes, communication systems, information systems and performance measurement systems.
  • Identify areas for potential collaboration between UL Standards & Engagement and external stakeholders for the technical advancement of UL Standards publications.
  • In collaboration with International Standards leadership, achieves international engagement related to the development of new standards and programs, international adoption of existing standards and programs, and for understanding and acting on the experience and findings of international partners where assigned standards are in use.
  • Assess the impact and relevance of assigned standards and for implementing action to increase standard relevance/impact where appropriate.
  • Represent UL Standards & Engagement, and our development activities, through presentations, articles, testimony, and participation on panel discussions.
  • Serve as Chair for select standards or program development stakeholder bodies for specified product categories or industry sectors.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Expert on accreditation requirements, operating procedures, Binational/Trinational standards development processes, and the application of standards in both regulated and voluntary compliance environments.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies, build business plans where and when necessary, and facilitate at public engagements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a high-performing team, setting high standards, and accountability for process and results.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including demonstrated proficiency in addressing cultural differences across North America and Internationally.
  • Effective Mediation skills to manage and mediate conflict, to negotiate, and to influence others with the ability to maintain perspective and professionalism during technical disagreements.
  • Working knowledge of technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Working knowledge of standards in use in areas of expertise.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • University degree in applied science, physical science, engineering, or another technology/related discipline, with the minimum of eight years of related work experience. Advanced degree preferred.
