What you’ll learn & achieve:

Are you interested in a career in renewable energy? Come join the Grid Solutions team within the Renewables group at UL and learn about what it takes to predict the generation from renewable energy projects before they are constructed and during their operation. On the Grid Solutions team, you will work with technical subject matter experts to produce and analyze weather-based wind and solar power production forecasts for operational wind and solar projects that are essential for managing today’s electricity grid.  The right candidate will also work on simulating generation from wind and solar plants to help plan the electricity grid of the future. In performing the work, you will learn about the renewable energy industry, participate in scientific programming and data analysis exercises, and apply advanced statistical and meteorological concepts to renewable energy forecasting. You will work in a team environment with staff at all levels contributing to the development of innovative, analytical, and high-quality products and services.

We are looking for a highly motivated intern to become involved in a wide range of renewable energy forecasting and data simulation activities. The exact work to be performed will depend on the background, skillsets, and interests of each individual, but may include:

  • Perform standard and customized analyses of renewable energy forecast accuracy in different situations and across different geographies
  • Support the development of scientific programs to process and quality control real-world data used to optimally tune renewable energy forecasts or simulated renewable generation
  • Participate in various stages of the forecasting lifecycle, from initial intake and setup to enhancements of mature forecasting products and services
  • Ensure high quality forecast deliverables through monitoring and configuration of web-based dashboards and system alerting tools
  • Participate in the simulation of generation from wind and solar plants to support grid planning
  • Perform other duties as directed

Throughout your work, you will contribute to the development of processes to increase work product efficiency and quality, and learn and apply company quality control standards and standard operating procedures.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Currently enrolled as a Senior in an undergraduate/graduate program focusing on physical/atmospheric sciences, engineering, or computer science; other disciplines will be considered
  • Comfortable working in a Linux environment
