General – Green Earth – Safer World

At UL, we know why we come to work.

Underwriters Laboratories Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Researcher to join our growing team.  FSRI research addresses the world’s unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers.

As a post-doctoral researcher, you will collaborate with other researchers to apply a wide variety of scientific knowledge based in disciplines of mechanical and fire protection engineering with the goal of improving fire safety.

Specifically, this two-year position is focused on addressing concerns related to advancements in experimental measurement and numerical modelling of heat transfer, chemical reaction phenomena, and products of combustion from battery fires.  Topic areas include: lithium ion battery fire suppression, stranded energy mitigation methods, characterization and mitigation of battery gas explosion hazards, and air and water contamination from battery fires.

The post-doctoral researcher will assist in initiating the design, development, execution and implementation of fire safety research projects. Conducts experiments, modeling, and analysis to provide accurate data and information with the goal of developing that information into peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, and on-line educational programs. Defines concepts and criteria to resolve major problems in current programs or approaches on topics related to fire safety engineering.  Maintains substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories and contributes to scientific literature and conferences. Uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of scientific problems.

UL Research Institutes has COVID-19 protocols and policies in place to ensure the safety of our employees, customers and clients. Effective November 1, 2021, the company mandates that employees are vaccinated against COVID-19 as a condition of employment (except where prohibited by law), subject to reasonable accommodation as required by law.
