Underwriters Laboratories Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) is seeking Summer 2023 Engineering Interns to join our Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI) for a 10-12 week research experience.  FSRI research addresses the world’s unresolved fire safety risks and emerging dangers.  


As an FSRI engineering intern, you will collaborate with other researchers to apply a variety of scientific knowledge based in the disciplines of fire science and analytical chemistry with the goal of improving fire safety.  In this position, you will assist in initiating the development, execution and implementation of fire safety research projects. There are several intern opportunities in different research areas which   include: battery fire suppression, thermal conductivity of materials, wildland urban interface fire mitigation, fire investigation, and chemical analysis of materials.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • As an Engineering Intern, you will play a role in the fire safety research conducted by the Fire Safety Research Institute as you:
  • Assist with the performance of fire experiments 
  • Develops engineering drawings
  • Programs scripts for data reduction
  • Conducts and documents reviews of scientific literature to support research project needs
  • Safely uses hand tools, shop tools, and measuring equipment.
  • Assembles and installs measurement instruments into bench scale or full-scale experimental apparatus.
  • Supports the development of research reports through writing and data analysis
  • Performs other duties as directed.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all laboratory safety, physical and digital security practices.

  • The ideal candidate will bring several qualities to the team, including:
  • Positive and collaborative work ethic
  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.
  • Must be legally permitted to work in the United States.
  • Undergraduate or graduate student with a major in chemistry, materials science, fire protection engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering  or related field from an ABET accredited program. 
  • Knowledge of CAD software, data reduction techniques preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Eager to learn, team player, and ability to work autonomously
