We have an exciting opportunity for a Toxicology Sciences Laboratory Manager at UL Research Institutes (UL), in our Marietta, GA office. The Toxicology Sciences Laboratory Manager will oversee the utilization and maintenance of the Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI) Toxicological Sciences laboratory that includes operation of equipment, systems, and administration to support research initiatives and ensure compliance in all facets of laboratory operations. Key requirements will be to maintain and operate cell culture and biological analytical instrumentation along with supporting research activities. The Laboratory Manager reports to the Research Director, Toxicology and will work closely with research staff across the organization.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Oversee installation, daily operation, and maintenance of instrumentation including flow cytometers, confocal imagers, RT-PCR, Western blot and electrophoresis systems by establishing quality standards, developing operations, and troubleshooting procedures along with verifying instrument performance and managing maintenance.
  • Maintains in vitro cell culture and aids in the development and implementation of exposure assessment and toxicological evaluation procedures.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Maintains laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems, recommending improvements, establishing priorities, testing, writing user manuals and training research staff while also maintaining security and confidentiality.
  • Ensures research staff compliance in biosafety and GLP training along with establishing and documenting operational procedures for instrumentation including safety protocols.
  • Support additional researchers as a team in the development of measurement protocols and outcome needs for research objectives.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
  • Provides administrative support for the laboratory by acting as manager on call and contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  • Work with facilities and safety management to keep laboratory facility operating effectively and safely.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Expert knowledge in 2D and 3D in vitro cell culture, complex toxicity testing systems, laboratory management, equipment, safety and compliance.
  • Knowledge and experience with genotoxicity assessments, RT-PCR, Western blot, flow cytometry, and other advanced analytical instrumentation.
  • Experience in establishing quality and statistical measures associated with analytical measurements.
  • Problem solving skills with the ability to identify root causes, develop practical solutions, and work in collaboration with colleagues across the organization to address strategic, operational, and any other roadblocks to success.
  • Positive and collaborative attitude and interpersonal skills to work effectively with leaders and colleagues across the organization.
  • Engaging and approachable management style to lead and develop a high performing team, setting high standards and accountability for process and results.
  • High degree of curiosity to learn about the mission and impact of the organization and its areas of specialization.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to operate at a high level, including attention to detail, ability to multitask and work on tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office is required. Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint, and knowledge of analytical tools and databases are preferred.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in Biological Sciences, Toxicology or related field required plus preferably at least 8 years’ experience within a laboratory environment.
