We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Communications and Public Relations based in our Houston Office supporting our Electrochemical Safety Research Institute (ESRI).


The Director of Communications and Public Relations will direct the Communications and Public Relations strategy and function including internal and external communications, executive positioning and strategic sponsorships. The role reports to the VP & Executive Director, ESRI, and will work closely with other directors, leaders and colleagues to advance the growth strategy of ESRI.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Director of Communications and Public Relations, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:


  • Collaborate with all levels of the organization and stakeholders to develop and implement ESRI communication strategies.
  • Develop communication approach, processes, resources and governance frameworks to ensure high quality, aligned, and brand compliant communication is delivered to the market.
  • Collaborates on defining measurement frameworks and ensures tracking and reporting to inform ongoing optimization of various communcaition channels.
  • Provides expert counsel to ESRI leadership and responsible for global strategic planning across institute communication function; fosters cross-functional collaboration
  • Directs messaging and writing/editorial efforts. Champions storytelling and seeks new platforms for effective storytelling.
  • Provides senior-level guidance on best practices in crisis and issues management communications.
  • Directs staffing, team development, budget planning and allocation, vendor and agency management, and ensures best practices are followed across ESRI.
  • Defines and delivers communication strategy that aligns with ULRI brand strategy to build and protect ULRI’s presence and reputation.
  • Directs proactive and reactive media and analyst relations strategy
  • Promote ESRIs research and the broader ULRI organization through media relations.

  • Strong people and agency management skills with the ability to select the best third party partners for the job and lead the RFP process.
  • Have balanced knowledge and understanding of both the content and operations sides of marketing and communications.
  • Working knowledge of the latest marketing technologies, tools and platforms.
  • Proficiency in MS Office is required. Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint, and knowledge of analytical tools and databases is preferred.
  • High degree of curiosity to learn about the mission and impact of the organization and its areas of specialization.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Degree in communication, marketing or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in marketing or related filed including four years or more of relevant management/leadership experience.
  • Previous PR and media outreach experience is required.
