Chemical Insights Research Institute (CIRI), a Research Institute of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., is recruiting a Research Manager for Field Operations for its air quality and health studies related to indoor/outdoor air pollution and chemical exposure. This role will be responsible for conducting in- house and field research studies; acquiring, maintaining, and operating portable measurement equipment; conducting risk assessments, management of research data for final reports, and preparing publications for peer reviewed journals.  

This role will be a part of a collaborative internal and external research team in the study of indoor/outdoor air quality and other environmental pollution and its impact on health. Specialized knowledge in the study of building systems, building ventilation, chemical and particle sampling and analysis, air modeling, sensor application, chemical risk assessments and health surveys is required.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Manage and execute in-field research studies and laboratory exposure chamber studies related to environmental measurements and health assessments.
  • Analyze research data for study objectives using standard practices, risk assessments, and statistical tools.
  • Prepare research reports, publications and other communications on research approach, findings, and applications.
  • Acquire and maintain portable analytical measurement equipment suitable for in-house exposure chamber use and external field studies, establishing use and maintenance protocols, making sure Institute is on the leading edge of available technologies.
  • Support CIRI and university research partners in specific studies involving building evaluations, indoor and outdoor air pollution, health measures, and other public safety risks. 
  • Expand CIRI’s technical and subject matter presence through the development of internal and external materials via reports, blogs, presentations, web materials and supporting researchers on journal articles and data presentations.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Experience in conducting various research measurement methodologies (including both qualitative and quantitative studies), statistical analysis, and translation and dissemination of research and evaluation findings.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively on a team and with diverse external partners and communities.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, especially with time-sensitive work.
  • Ability to compose reports, presentations, and written communication in an organized, logical, and concise manner.
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting field studies on air pollution and health consequences using discrete and real time sampling and analysis methods.
  • Experience in conducting building studies including measurement of ventilation rates. 
  • Translating research knowledge into actional steps and materials to bring positive change and reduction of hazards.
  • Drives for results, is proactive, balancing analysis vs doing and commits to organizational goals and tied to highest of standards.

Experience and Education Requirements

  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or Building Scientist with PhD or MS in industrial hygiene, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or toxicological sciences.
  • Required 5 plus years’ post graduate experience in active environmental measurement research or consulting involving building air quality and outdoor air pollution studies and development of written scientific reports and publications.
