The Electrochemical  Safety Research Institute (ESRI), of Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes, is recruiting a Laboratory Manager. In this role, the Laboratory Manager will oversee the utilization and maintenance of the ESRI laboratory that includes equipment, systems, space and safety, and administration to ensure compliance in all facets of laboratory operations. 

 

The Laboratory Manager reports to the VP & Executive Director, ESRI and will work closely with other leaders, researchers and colleagues across the research organization to advance operational excellence.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Maintains laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures along with certifying instrument performance and arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.
  • Ensures research staff compliance in lab safety training.
  • Maintains laboratory supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies.
  • Maintains laboratory productivity by monitoring workload of functional areas; identifying peak and slack periods; making operational or staffing adjustment.
  • Maintains calibrations, arranges for maintenance of equipment, extension of maintenance agreements and warranties, and replacement of components on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintains quality results by participating in the ESRI quality assurance program; consulting with research staff; performing proficiency surveys; reviewing quality control and quality assurance programs; making adjustments in policy and procedures, generating reports, maintaining records.
  • Maintains laboratory information system by identifying information needs and problems, recommending improvements, establishing priorities, testing, writing user manuals and training research staff while also maintaining security and confidentiality.
  • Maintains communication with facility managers to report requests on a timely basis and keep apprised on status.
  • Implements new programs, tests, methods, instrumentation, and procedures by investigating alternatives; preparing proposals; developing and performing parallel testing and monitoring progress.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies.
  • Provides administrative support for the laboratory by acting as manager on call and contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

  • Proficiency in MS Office is required. Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint, and knowledge of analytical tools and databases are preferred.

Education and Training Requirements:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or related field required plus preferably at least 8 years’ experience within a laboratory environment.
  • Minimum 4 years management or leadership experience.
