We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Strategic Initiatives with UL Standards and Engagement (ULSE). The Director of Strategic Initiatives is responsible for the development and execution of a comprehensive vision and strategy for ULSE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to making the world a safer place through standards and advocacy. 


Reporting to the Executive Director of ULSE, the Director of Strategic Initiatives will play a key role in delivering against the growth and impact aspirations of the organization, as it leverages the existing strengths of the UL standards organization and develops new capabilities in engagement. 


The Director of Strategic Initiatives will work closely with the leaders of ULSE’s major functions, including standards programs, standards operations, international, data science, communications, partnerships and insights & policy analysis, all with the goal of enhancing the capabilities and impact of the organization. 


The location for this role is flexible, but requires periodic travel to key locations in Illinois, North Carolina, Washington DC, and Ottawa, Canada.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Director of Strategic Initiatives, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Scope, structure and execute strategy projects to deliver strategic roadmaps towards the ULSE vision for a safer world.
  • Develop and lead a high performing team of 2-3 strategy professionals to deliver results in collaboration with team leads, executives, and other stakeholders.
  • Partner across multiple teams, internal and external stakeholders to align projects towards strategic goals.
  • Develop, coordinate, and oversee execution of key initiatives across the organization, and track progress and performance towards expected outcomes.
  • Manage organizational KPIs for continued reassessment of strategic roadmap.
  • Work with ULSE Communications team on key presentations and external events.
  • Lead and collaborate on annual budget process, working with different ULSE teams and the finance organization.
  • As Chief of Staff, partner with ULSE Executive Director to ensure effective management of calendars, budgets and process improvements.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

The ideal candidate will have strong strategy, planning, and implementation experience and be accustomed to working with multiple stakeholders to deliver successful projects and organizational performance.

  • Undergraduate degree in business, STEM, or related field plus 7 years of experience are required. MBA is desired.
  • Experience of working with senior-level management in a corporate or non-profit setting, preferably in the areas of strategy and program management, and growth situations.
  • Track record of results-driven management of projects and teams.
  • International experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication and presentation skills.
