We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Software Program Manager at Underwriters Laboratories.


The Standards Software Program Manager plans and manages assigned standards and programs to accomplish strategic and operational goals related to software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity across the UL Standards portfolio. Key functions:

  • Identifies opportunities for new or emerging standards based on specific criteria.
  • Uses effective mediation skills to drive the standards development process and outcomes that advance UL Standards & Engagement’s mission.
  • Develops relationships with key stakeholders relative to assigned standards. Maintains openness and collaboration in the development of all standards and programs.  
  • Translates key learnings related to software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity into standards, best practices, and other publications.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards Software Program Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:


Recognize and manage Standards response to technologies related to software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity of products in the UL Standards portfolio.

  • Drive the adoption of cross-cutting component and function-related software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity standards and requirements in all relevant end-product and service standards.
  • Drive the incorporation of up-to-date referenced standards in all UL Standards.
  • Drive the marketplace adoption and use of UL Standards to maximize the positive mission impact of UL Standards.
  • Identify and cultivate key technical relationships and for representing UL Standards on committees associated with prioritized technical issues.
  • Oversee technical issues that support the mission and integrity of requirements applied in standards development programs.
  • Maintain awareness of new and emerging technologies related to software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity for products in the UL Standards portfolio, and advises on requirements being developed for associated technologies.
  • Develop and implement technical program strategic plans, processes, communication systems, information systems and performance measurement systems.
  • Monitor technical trends, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise and responsibility and applies to programs in keeping with Standards strategy.
  • Identify areas for collaboration between UL Standards & Engagement and external stakeholders for the technical advancement of UL Standards.
  • Responsible for driving the standards process to develop and maintain standards that effectively mitigate identified hazards in fulfillment of UL Standards & Engagement’s mission, that fully reflect new and emerging software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity technologies, that fully reflect current marketplace issues, and that are developed with consideration of associated codes and regulations.
  • Responsible for assessing the impact and relevance of assigned standards and for implementing action to increase standard relevance/impact where appropriate.
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining effectively balanced consensus bodies, with regard to accredited procedure compliance but also more broadly to seek international engagement where appropriate, and a balance between perspectives across each standards landscape.
  • Represents UL Standards and our development activities through presentations, articles, testimony and participation on panel discussions.
  • Serve as Chair for standards or program development stakeholder bodies for specified product categories or industry sectors.
  • Facilitate the development of consensus within the stakeholder body by engaging all interests to identify solutions that have broad support.
  • Facilitate and leads meetings in a way that is efficient, focused and promotes active participation from all participants.
  • Function as mediator in the development of solutions that allow consensus to be achieved in the presence of opposing interests.
  • Guide stakeholders through the standards development and maintenance process, making sure that all actions are in accordance with applicable UL or ULC Standards policies, procedures, and any Memorandums of Understanding or other agreements with partner organizations. Examples include STP regulations, ULC Standards procedures. UL’s antitrust policy, UL’s patent policy, ULC Standards Patent Policy, UL’s ethics policy, etc.
  • In cooperation and consultation with other leaders, mentors project managers in the fulfillment of their responsibilities and their individual career development plans. As appropriate, delegates select consensus body chair assignments to qualified staff, and effectively manages appointed chair.
  • In collaboration with other leaders, achieves international engagement related to the development of new standards and programs, international adoption of existing standards and programs, and for understanding and acting on the experience and findings of international partners where assigned standards are in use.
  • Support the dissemination and gathering of related technical information with our international partners.
  • Establish and maintains an active line of communication with key internal and external stakeholders, and an open line of communication with all stakeholders in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • May have direct reports functioning as consensus body chairs or technical landscape researchers / advisors.
  • Organize and facilitates stakeholder meetings.
  • Use effective mediation skills to drive the standards development process and outcomes that advance UL’s mission.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders relative to assigned standards.
  • Maintain openness and collaboration in the development of all standards and programs.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Degree in computer science, physical science, engineering, or other technology discipline plus either eight years of software, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cybersecurity work experience or five years of experience within UL Standards with successful demonstration of the skills required for the execution of this position.   Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies and build business plans where and when necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage stakeholder relationships, to mediate conflict, to negotiate, and to influence others.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain perspective and professionalism during technical conflicts.
  • Working knowledge of technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
