We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Sustainability Program Manager at Underwriters Laboratories.


The Standards Sustainability Program Manager will play a critical role in the design, development, and operationalization of a new Sustainability vertical within the broader UL Standards & Engagement organization. Key functions include:

  • Planning and managing assigned standards and programs to accomplish strategic and operational goals.
  • Organizing and facilitating stakeholder meetings.
  • Using effective mediation skills to drive the standards development process and outcomes that advance UL Standards & Engagement’s mission.
  • Developing relationships with key stakeholders relative to assigned standards.
  • Maintaining openness and collaboration in the development of all standards and programs.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards Sustainability Program Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Define what sustainability means for UL Standards & Engagement.
  • Develop evaluation and prioritization criteria to identify which new or emerging standards to pilot.
  • Refine potential sustainability topics to embed into standards.
  • Partner with SMEs to validate and refine initial pilots.
  • Translate key learnings into standard operating procedures and best practices.
  • Integrate with standards development process to develop or update standards.
  • Develop and implementing technical program strategic plans, processes, communication systems, information systems and performance measurement systems.
  • Recognize and manage UL Standards & Engagement’s response to technologies related to the circular economy, recycling, and sustainability of products in the UL Standards & Engagement portfolio.
  • Advise on requirements for new and emerging technologies related to circular economy, recycling, and sustainability of products in the UL Standards & Engagement portfolio.
  • Drive the standards process to develop and maintain standards that effectively mitigate identified hazards in fulfillment of UL Standards & Engagement’s mission, that fully reflect current technologies and current marketplace issues, and that are developed with consideration of associated codes and regulations.
  • Drive the marketplace adoption and use of UL standards to maximize the positive mission impact of UL Standards & Engagement.
  • Oversee technical issues that support the mission and integrity of requirements applied in standards development programs.
  • Monitor technical trends, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise and responsibility and applies to programs in keeping with UL Standards & Engagement strategy.
  • Assess the impact and relevance of assigned standards and implement actions to increase standard relevance/impact where appropriate.
  • Cultivate and maintain key technical relationships and represent UL Standards on committees associated with prioritized technical issues.
  • Develop and maintain effectively balanced consensus bodies with regard to accredited procedure compliance, and more broadly to seek international engagement where appropriate and balancing between perspectives across each standards landscape.
  • Represent UL Standards & Engagement and its development activities through presentations, articles, testimonies, and panel discussions.
  • Serve as Chair for standards or program development stakeholder bodies for specified product categories or industry sectors.
  • Facilitate the development of consensus within the stakeholder body by engaging all interests to identify solutions that have broad support.
  • Facilitate and lead meetings in a way that is efficient, focused and promotes active participation from all participants.
  • Function as mediator in the development of solutions that allow consensus to be achieved in the presence of opposing interests.
  • Guide stakeholders through the development process, making sure that all actions are in accordance with applicable UL or ULC Standards policies, procedures, and any Memorandums of Understanding or other agreements with partner organizations. Examples include STP regulations, ULC Standards procedures. UL’s antitrust policy, UL’s patent policy, ULC Standards Patent Policy, UL’s ethics policy, etc.
  • Establish and maintain active lines of communication with key stakeholders (internal and external) and open lines of communication with all stakeholders in assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • Identify areas for potential collaboration between UL Standards & Engagement and external stakeholders for technical advancement.
  • Support the dissemination and gathering of related technical information with our international partners.
  • Performing other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • Degree in environmental science, physical science, engineering, or other technology discipline plus either eight years of related work experience or five years of experience within UL Standards & Engagement with successful demonstration of the skills required for the execution of this position.  
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies, build business plans where and when necessary and facilitate at public engagements.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mediate conflict, to negotiate, and to influence others.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain perspective and professionalism during technical conflicts.
  • Working knowledge of technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Working knowledge of product value chains or prior experiences in product sustainability.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, large-scale interdisciplinary programs with diverse and senior stakeholders, especially in an academic or institutional setting.
  • Working knowledge of standards in use in areas of expertise.
  • Working knowledge of sustainability reporting frameworks, e.g. GRI, TCFD, SASB.
  • Advanced degree in environmental science, physical science, engineering, or other technology discipline.
