The UL Solutions Fire R&D team is seeking a candidate for a technically rewarding position at the Northbrook, IL, USA location. The successful candidate will perform laboratory-based and theoretical research work to advance UL's service offerings and address customer needs, focusing on fire and explosion hazards. Such hazards include novel refrigerant and other flammable gases, and explosion hazards related to stationary and portable energy storage systems. This role is best suited for an individual who thrives within a highly collaborative work environment and one who is adept at written, interpersonal, and oral communication skills.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

 

  • Utilize knowledge of engineering concepts to research tasks including test method development, apparatus development, and various applied research tasks
  • Conduct research using physical and computational test methods ranging from bench scale to full scale
  • Conduct literature reviews to analyze data and test results to determine causes of problems and develop solutions
  • Develop project proposals and lead research projects
  • Perform measurements with wide range of instrumentation and understand the principles of operation to ensure appropriate application and calibration
  • Stay ahead of changing technology and industry trends by reading academic journals and industry publications
  • Write technical reports and present content to a variety of venues
  • Research focus to include deflagrations, battery hazards, as well as traditional fire protection engineering

  • Ability to participate and lead hands on laboratory work; working knowledge of modeling/simulation tools useful if paired with hands-on abilities

What makes you a great fit:

  • Advanced degree in chemical, fire protection, or mechanical engineering, or other related discipline plus 7 years related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research projects and communicate results through technical writing and presenting
  • Established ability to build and maintain working relationships with technical and business colleagues, both within and outside the organization. 
  • Demonstrated experience in deflagration testing, battery fire research, and analysis of fire phenomena
  • Direct or relevant experience with fire- and explosion-related hazards of lithium-ion batteries (and/or other energy storage technologies), renewables, and/or flammable refrigerants preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain theoretical and applied engineering skills
  • Proficiency with MS office as well as data acquisition software
