As part of the Renewable Energy Advisory Team, the Energy Market Specialist will work with internal stake-holders in our storage modeling and grid forecasting groups and external stake holders including developers, project owners, financiers and other interested parties to describe energy market rules for the participation of renewables and storage projects in various RTO and ISO energy markets.


This role can be based remotely.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

In this role, you will join our Storage and Renewable Energy teams that work on hybrid utility scale systems, distributed and transmission systems in support of our independent power producer, developer, financial institution, and utility customers. While working within a collaborative team environment as the subject matter expert, you will assist internal development initiatives to expand UL’s power market consulting practice as well as external projects providing fundamental market analysis, insights and expertise to deliver customized analysis to our growing customer base. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Communicate and describe detailed market rules to internal and external parties for the participation of renewable and energy storage projects.
  • Generate detailed RTO/ISO market studies for participation in energy, capacity, and ancillary services markets. 
  • Review battery energy storage system dispatch forecasts for comparison to off-take agreements.
  • Review interconnection process and compare to the status to project’s timeline for execution
  • Perform in-depth analysis of power market operations
  • Review market implementations in industry standard tools, provide recommendations on simulation tools along with providing recommendations for validation and test cases to confirm.
  • Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
  • Work on multiple project teams, balancing competing project demands and working with staff from diverse technical backgrounds.
  • Participate in Business Development activities such as initiating communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services. Follow up on contacts from clients. Communicate with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements.  Act to address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shows. Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Propose development of new and/or revised UL requirements.

What makes you a great fit:

  • You have a deep understanding of energy wholesale markets and ISOs/RTOs with a background and experience from the energy industry, oil & gas industry, or other.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and power systems, engineering, physics, economics, data science from an accredited University.  Master of Science degree, preferred.
  • Customer-centric mindset and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Curiosity. Whether exploring new ways renewables and storage are dispatched, new market rules, tools or getting to know a stakeholder, you are innovative and inquisitive.
