We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Accreditation Manager at Underwriters Laboratories.

The Standards division, of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., is currently seeking an Standards Accreditation Manager to join our growing team.  The Standards Accreditation Manager
directly manages the relationships with accreditation bodies and the attainment and maintenance of identified accreditations including ANSI, SCC, and others as assigned. The position represents ULS and advocates for innovation and improvements within the external accreditations community, and  provides leadership to staff with respect to the processes in place to meet the accreditation requirements for portfolio of standards.  Resolving accreditation related requests and leads changes to processes resulting from changes to the accreditation requirements is a key compenant of this role alonf with serving as the point person and coordinator for all complaints, appeals, and duplication concerns.  Relative to accredited procedures, the Standards Accreditation Manager employs a quality control and project manager/program manager internal audit system developed using a risk-based approach, and enables the development of smart standards solutions that are globally relevant, and fulfill our mission of public safety and societal well-being.  The manager will also be in charge of developing and maintaining adequate staff to successfully complete all accreditations responsibilities.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards Accreditation Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Recognize and manage Standards response to technologies related to the circular economy, recycling, and sustainability of products in the UL Standards portfolio.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and interpretation of standards development policy and process for internal and external audiences.  (This includes but not limited to ANSI Essential Requirements and SCC Requirements & Guidance and UL Process guidance documents and Accreditation Manuals).
  • Leverage participation in external forums to drive positive change and innovation pertaining to accreditations.
  • Contribute to and seek out best practices from the standards development community.
  • Manage UL/ULC Standards SCC Work Programs and ANSI portfolios.
  • Oversee ANSI and SCC audits and internal ULS audits.
  • Identify and provide recommendations for potential changes to ANSI Essential Requirements and other accreditation bodies (an example would be an exception to timelines as a result of technology advancements).
  • Provide guidance to Program Managers and Standards Technical Committee Chairs related to potential risks to accreditation of decisions, procedural compliance concerns, etc.
  • Provide direction and leadership on internal and external training initiatives related to the standards development policy and process.
  • Related to our accredited procedures, employ a robust quality control and project manager/program manager internal audit system based on risk assessment.
  • Fulfill roles as determined by Standards Leadership to be appropriate within accreditors (such as ANSI ExSC, ANSI BSR, and SCC SDOAC) and/or other organizations.
  • Serve as coordinator and point person for complaints, appeals, and duplication concerns.
  • Provide accreditation related direction on STP/TC membership matters as needed.
  • Provide guidance and recommendations to Standards Leadership Team (SLT), as needed, with respect to accreditation requirements.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job. 
  • Apply organizational policies and assures adherence to function procedures.
  • Lead accreditation improvement activities to ensure that they are driving intended results.
  • Collaborate with accreditors to determine applicability of accreditation requirements to smart standards solutions (alternative documents) that are globally relevant and fulfill our mission of public safety and societal well-being.
  • Coordinate with Legal where accreditation concerns deem necessary.
  • Develop and maintain adequate staff and processes, establishes budgets.
  • Coordinates resources to attain and maintain external accreditations.
  • Develop a fully competent staff by supervising the selection, development, training, and employee relations. Maintain a staff contingency and succession plan. 
  • Develop staff performance measures and goals in support of UL strategic direction. 
  • Manage the performance of direct reports by defining accountabilities, establishing performance objectives and goals, providing career counseling, feedback, and guidance, ensuring understanding of and compliance with all policies and requirements.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • 4-year degree in social science, physical science, engineering, or other technology/related discipline plus eight years of directly related work experience.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies, and build business plans where and when necessary.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mediate conflict, to negotiate, and to influence others.
  • Internally and/or externally recognized as a thought leader, with broad expertise in applied accreditations.
  • Detailed knowledge of conformity assessment services/businesses and accreditation requirements and processes.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high quality.
  • Ability to utilize sophisticated analytical thought process to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions.
  • Ability to influence the acceptance and implementation of developed conclusions and recommendations.
