The Standards division, of Underwriters Laboratories Inc., is currently seeking an Standards Program Manager to join our growing team.  In this role, you will plan and manage assigned standards and programs to accomplish strategic and operational goals, lead a team of Project Managers to organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings in the role of Technical Committee Chair. You will use effective mediation skills to drive the consensus standards development process, as well as outcomes that advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement. This position requires someone to guide stakeholders and Project Managers through the consensus standards development process as their expert on accreditation requirements, operating procedures, Binational/Trinational standards development processes, and the application of standards in both regulated and voluntary compliance environments. You will provide expertise and leadership to internal and external stakeholders related to the different technical landscape, regulatory, climate, government and cultural environments in both the USA and Canada. The Standards Program Manager is intregral in developing relationships with key stakeholders relative to assigned standards and maintaining openness and collaboration in the development of all standards and programs.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards Program Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

 

Recognize and manage Standards response to technologies related to Cannabis Facility Safety & Security; Electrical Conduit & Boxes; Fuel-burning Appliances; Storage/Transfer of Liquid/Gas Fuels; Sustainability; Water Appliances; Wire & Cable.

  • Drive the adoption of cross-cutting component and function related safety standards and requirements in all relevant end-product and service standards.
  • Drive the incorporation of up-to-date referenced standards in all UL Standards’ publications.
  • Drive the marketplace adoption and use of UL Standards’ publications to maximize the positive impact of the UL Standards team on the mission of UL Standards & Engagement”.
  • Cultivate and maintains key technical relationships in support of the consensus standards development process.
  • Represent UL Standards & Engagement on committees associated with prioritized technical issues, including Technical Harmonization Committees and Code development panels.
  • Oversee technical issues that support the mission and integrity of requirements applied in standards development programs.
  • Advise on requirements being developed for new and emerging technologies related to Cannabis Facility Safety & Security; Electrical Conduit & Boxes; Fuel-burning Appliances; Storage/Transfer of Liquid/Gas Fuels; Sustainability; Water Appliances; Wire & Cable.
  • Develop and implement technical program strategic plans, processes, communication systems, information systems and performance measurement systems.
  • Monitor technical trends, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise and responsibility and applies to programs in keeping with Standards strategy.
  • Identify areas for potential collaboration between UL Standards & Engagement and external stakeholders for the technical advancement of UL Standards publications.
  • Support the dissemination and gathering of related technical information with our international partners.
  • Responsible for driving the consensus standards development process to develop and maintain standards that effectively mitigate identified hazards in fulfillment of UL Standards & Engagement’s mission, that fully reflect current technologies, that fully reflect current marketplace issues, that are developed with consideration of associated codes and regulations.
  • Responsible for assessing the impact and relevance of assigned standards and for implementing action to increase standard relevance/impact where appropriate.
  • Responsible for maintaining effectively balanced consensus bodies, not only for accredited procedure compliance but also more broadly to seek international engagement where appropriate, and to balance between perspectives across each standards landscape.
  • Represent UL Standards & Engagement, and our development activities, through presentations, articles, testimony, and participation on panel discussions.
  • Serve as Chair for Standards or Program development stakeholder bodies for specified product categories or industry sectors.
  • Facilitate the development of consensus within the stakeholder body by engaging all interests to identify solutions that have broad support.
  • Facilitate and leads meetings in a way that is efficient, focused and promotes active participation from all participants.
  • Function as mediator in the development of solutions that allow consensus to be achieved in the presence of opposing interests.
  • Guide stakeholders through the consensus standards development process, making sure that all actions are in accordance with applicable UL or ULC Standards policies, procedures, and any Memorandums of Understanding or other agreements with partner organizations. Examples include STP regulations, ULC Standards procedures. UL’s antitrust policy, UL’s patent policy, ULC Standards Patent Policy, and UL’s ethics policy, among others.
  • In cooperation and consultation with Operations Managers, mentors project managers in the fulfillment of their responsibilities and their individual career development plans. As appropriate, delegates select consensus body chair assignments to qualified staff, and effectively manages appointed chair.
  • In collaboration with International Standards leadership, achieves international engagement related to the development of new standards and programs, international adoption of existing standards and programs, and for understanding and acting on the experience and findings of international partners where assigned standards are in use.
  • Establish and maintain an active line of communication with key stakeholders (internal and external), and an open line of communication with all stakeholders in assigned area(s) of responsibility.
  • May have direct reports functioning as consensus body chairs or technical landscape researchers / advisors.
  • Organize and facilitate stakeholder meetings.
  • Use effective mediation skills to drive the consensus standards development process, as well as outcomes that advance UL’s mission.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders relative to assigned standards.
  • Maintain openness and collaboration in the development of all standards and programs.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

  • 4-year degree in applied science, physical science, engineering, or other technology/related discipline, plus either eight years of related work experience, or five years of experience within UL Standards & Engagement with successful demonstration of the skills required for the execution of this position.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategies, build business plans where and when necessary and facilitate at public engagements.
  • Excellent communication skills required, including demonstrated proficiency in addressing cultural differences across North America and Internationally, Diversity and Inclusion, and related policies of UL Standards & Engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and mediate conflict, to negotiate, and to influence others.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain perspective and professionalism during technical conflicts.
  • Working knowledge of technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
  • Working knowledge of standards in use in areas of expertise.
  • Competency in technical written French terminology applicable to the assigned standards preferred.
