We have an exciting opportunity for a Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) for Underwriters Laboratories. The Director of FP&A leads the budget, analysis, and reporting functions for the organization, establishing systems, processes, and procedures, and supporting leadership in decision making through regular financial reporting and ad-hoc analysis and insights. The position supports UL’s two nonprofit organizations, Research and Standards & Engagement, and reports to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Director of FP&A, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Lead the annual budget process for the organization, working in collaboration with unit and department leaders and the senior leadership team to ensure alignment of resources with the organization’s short- and long-term strategies.
  • Collaborate with strategy, operations, and human resources leaders in the development of long-term strategic plans, including facilities, equipment, people, and other resources.
  • Hire, lead, and develop a high-performing FP&A team to support the growth and mission of the organization.
  • Work closely with the Controller to overseee the design, preparation, review, and distribution or monthly and other regular financial and analytical reports that support ongoing decision making and management of the organization.
  • Support senior leaders in preparation for Board and other leadership meetings regarding financial planning and results.
  • Lead ad-hoc analysis, report creation, and presentations for special projects and initiatives requiring historical and/or or forward looking financial analysis.
  • Develop and document business and financial planning and reporting policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Participate in the selection and contribute to the implementation of new ERP and/or financial software platforms.
  • Collaborate with accounting, treasury, tax, and other internal functions in the ongoing management of the overall finance organization.
  • Participate and contribute in other department specific and cross-functional initiatives.

  • Responsiveness and a sense of urgency, with focus on outcomes, structure, and process improvement for the short and long term.

 Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, with preference to a degree in accounting, business, economics or related field. CPA and MBA or advanced degree with emphasis in finance are preferred. Prior experience with a major accounting firm preferred.
  • 10 years of experience in finance and accounting, including at least 5 years of oversight of FP&A and team management, is required.
  • Experience working with scientific research, academic or research institutions, and experience working with public policy, nonprofit, and/or mission driven organizations is desired.
  • Experience with financial planning for a complex, multi-affiliate environment including for profit and not for profit entities and shareholders is desired.
  • Management experience leading teams, developing strategy, and executing plans.
  • Proficiency in MS Office is required, with advanced skills in Excel are required. Experience and familiarity with analytical tools (e.g. PowerBI, Tableau) is highly desired.
