Lead the development and review of safety work products and safety processes for clients seeking compliance to standards in functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262, IEC 61508, IEC/EN 62061, ISO 61511, ISO 21448, UL 4600, and ISO 13849. Employ established methods and frameworks, relevant to functional safety and related fields to lead the engineering development or review of safety cases for complex software-intensive systems. Examples of such systems are self-driving vehicles, industrial automation systems, battery and energy storage systems in both vehicle and stationary applications, and related systems. Methods and frameworks include safety analysis such as FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, safety requirements management, safety concepts such as FSC/TSC work products, system and software architectures, HIL and SIL test, system integration test, vehicle integration test, and system/vehicle validation. Contribute to training by providing substantial portions of training events on topics relevant to functional safety and related fields, including ISO 26262, IEC 61508, IEC/EN 62061, ISO 61511, ISO 21448, UL 4600, ISO 13849, and other similar standards. Contribute to business development efforts by assisting in the definition of Statements of Work and providing budgetary estimates for client proposal development. Lead client programs by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews. Address client concerns and resolve client issues. Provide technical assistance to clients in reference to functional safety and related technical fields. Projects may include 15-20% travel to client sites and to other UL locations. Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. *This position qualifies for UL LLC’s employee referral policy program.*
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, automotive engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related field and two (2) years of experience as a functional safety engineer
OR
Master’s degree in electrical engineering, automotive engineering, computer engineering, or a directly related field and one (1) year of experience as a functional safety engineer
Must have work experience with each of the following: 1) Certified Functional Safety Professional; 2) ADAS and Autonomy system safety; 3) proven ability to apply ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 safety standards; 4) Performing Safety Analyses, including Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Dependent Failure Analysis (DFA) and Failure Modes and Effects Diagnostics Analysis (FMEDA); 5) calculation of probabilistic metrics for electronic hardware safety standards compliance; and 6) developing Functional Safety and Autonomy Safety Training Material.
