UL is seeking an Energy Laboratory Manager for our battery lab in the Toledo-Kalamazoo- Fort Wayne area! 

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Laboratory safety and operations management of large-format Li-ion battery laboratory focused on Industrial and Automotive sectors
  • Managing the lab operations team performance by defining accountabilities, establishing performance objectives, providing feedback and guidance and ensuring that all policies are understood and adhered to
  • Leading the development and execution of lab operation plans, achievement of business goals including capital expenditure for labs operations, maintenance and expansion
  • Partnering with engineering management, laboratory operations team and other business units to achieve customer satisfaction and business objectives
  • Identification and resolving safety and quality risks in laboratory operations, technical inconsistency and testing accuracy issues
  • Identifying and pursuing the development of requirements for test procedures beyond the scope of existing standards and requirements involving unique features and requiring the use of independent judgment
  • Establishment of appropriate testing programs and the coordination of laboratory activities within the designated laboratory
  • Managing the development, operations, maintenance and expansion of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment
  • Implementing policies, procedures and practices mandated for the laboratories to ensure compliance to ISO 17025 as well as other defined accreditation requirements for the designated laboratory
  • Integrating continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job utilizing the Lean Sigma approach
  • Ensuring the UL Code of Conduct, safety procedures, physical and digital security practices are implemented and followed in the designated lab
  • Performs other duties as directed. 

What makes you a great fit:

  • University degree in Engineering or related field
  • 8 years of related experience including at least four years of relevant management/leadership experience
  • Experience in electrical, mechanical, environmental, fire and/or endurance testing for battery application in the automotive (EV) and industrial application (ESS)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the electrical and chemical hazards with Li-ion batteries
  • Demonstrated leadership skills to meet business objectives, manage teams and meet expected results within timelines, budget, and quality
  • Detailed knowledge of product testing processes and methodologies and ability to monitor and improve laboratory operations efficiency
  • Knowledge of batteries / renewable energy industry challenges and requirements
  • Specific knowledge related to automotive OEMs specifications and requirements
  • Preferable experience with test system software (e.g., PUMA, Tornado, FEVflex, etc.)
  • Knowledge about the lab accreditations is a plus
  • First 12-18 months will be remote with occasional site visits.
