The Director of Information Technology (IT) leads the IT function to deliver superior services to the organization to enable growth, high performance, business continuity, and achieve the mission and goals of the organization. This role supports the UL Research Institutes and UL Standards & Engagement organizations.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Director of Information Technology, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Lead a high-performing IT organization to deliver a world-class integrated information and technology platform to support the professionals and mission of the organization.
  • Collaborate with leadership and other colleagues to develop short and long-term plans for the selection, implementation, and deployment of information technologies and systems that support the direct mission and/or support functions of the organization.
  • Experience in modernized systems, data security, and governance; focusing on ERP applications and mobilility that is nimble, cloud-based, and easy-to-use.
  • Periodically review existing and emerging technologies to identify and recommend changes that enhance efficiency, speed, security, cost, and value of IT to the organization.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and curiosity to drive the business toward new technologies and capabilities.
  • Manage all IT vendor relationships to ensure optimal product, service, and operating levels are delivered to the organization in alignment with respective contractual agreements.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance product and service levels provided by IT vendors and recommend renegotiations or vendor changes when necessary.
  • Ensure excellence in service levels provided to employees of the organization; including equipment ordering, delivery, training, and help-desk support.
  • Identify requirements and propose the implementation of solutions to ensure that the most current and effective business continuity, data, and information security protocols are in place within the organization, all vendors, and services utilized.
  • Develop and implement mechanisms that proactively identify, audit, track, report, and mitigate technology and data security risks.
  • Establish governance processes to ensure IT related needs are identified, prioritized, developed, and implemented according to organizational and leadership priorities.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and other functions to identify and implement training programs for technology skills development and promote data security.
  • Participate in and contribute to other organizational and cross-functional initiatives.

IT Functional Competencies and Desired Experience

  • Deep and broad expertise in information technology, data security, and IT vendor management, implementing systems in a fast-paced, growing, and rapidly changing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure close alignment of IT services and business needs.
  • Management and leadership of technical and information technology teams and technical professionals.
  • Management of IT service provider's offerings and developing a proven IT strategy to serve internal stakeholders that balances demand for IT services with sufficient capacity to meet demand.
  • IT services experience to provide oversight needed to implement the strategy, including ERP implementation (preferred).

  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills, to engage leaders, employees, and other stakeholders with the IT programs and support for the organization.

 Professional Experience And Education Requirements For The Role Include

  • Bachelor’s degree is required, with preference to a degree in science, technology, engineering or math.
  • 10 years of experience in information technology is required, including experience in data security.
  • Leadership of complex IT projects or programs requiring the integration of cross-functional technology and/or shared services.
  • Experience working with scientific research or academic institutions is desired.
  • Management experience leading teams, developing strategy, and executing plans.
  • Proficiency in MS Office is required.
