Intern - Standards Engineer

We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Engineer Intern at Underwriters Laboratories. 

Interns with the UL Standards and Engagement (ULS) Engineering Team will work together to solve real-world challenges that impact standards, sometimes spurring innovations that introduce new standards or standard solutions. The UL Standards Engineering team is charged with advancing the scientific and technical rigor of UL Standards and standard solutions.  As an intern, you will work with UL Standards engineers to apply basic engineering skills and hazard-based safety engineering principles to strengthen our standards and standard solutions.  In this role, you will collaborate across the UL Standards organization as well as with our partners across the Underwriters Laboratories enterprise to implement this complementary approach to safety standards development.

As a Standards Engineer Intern, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

• Assist with the dissemination and gathering of related technologies to build horizontal requirement test methodologies.
• Use basic engineering skills to provide solutions for assigned projects.
• Assist engineers in problem-solving issues by applying hazard-based safety engineering principles.
• Transform complex data into creative graphs, tables, charts, and other graphics to present and/or share the data comprehensively and concisely.
• Perform other duties as directed.

The ideal candidate will bring several qualities to the team, including:

• Junior or Senior in a University Degree Program (Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree) in Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Materials, Chemical Engineering or similar.
• Solid technical knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Office and other data analysis tools.  
• Demonstrated understanding of engineering mathematics.
• Ability to quickly understand new concepts and apply concepts to specific analytical problems with guidance from other engineering team members.
• Attention to detail including verbal and written skills used to communicate effectively with leadership and team members.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with technical and non-technical internal and stakeholders.
