We have an exciting opportunity for a Standards Project Engineer at Underwriters Laboratories.

 

The UL Standards & Engagement organization is currently seeking a Project Engineer to join our Engineering team.    In this role, you will work across a variety of functional groups that are directly involved in the development and maintenance of UL and ULC standards in support of our public safety mission and to accomplish strategic and operational goals.  You will have the opportunity to be directly involved in the development of new safety requirements in response to emerging technologies and services.  Additionally, you will support the growth and development of our engineering team to advance UL’s mission by collaborating across the Standards division to drive the technical rigor of our standards and documents.  A successful team member is someone who is results-oriented, can manage multiple projects, is successful in a fast-paced environment, and has excellent organizational and communication skills.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Standards Project Engineer, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Recognizes and supports Standards response to new and emerging technologies.
  • Supports the adoption of cross-cutting component safety standards and requirements in all relevant end product and service standards.
  • Assist with the incorporation of up-to-date referenced standards in UL Standards.
  • Assist in monitoring technical trends, developments (including but not limited to code and regulatory), and advancements in areas of expertise.
  • Organize and present technical information to stakeholder groups in support of selected standards development initiatives.
  • Assists with the dissemination and gathering of related technical information with our domestic and international partners.
  • Contributes to the development of training and educational programs for stakeholders through webinars, presentations, seminars, tradeshows, articles, and public speaking events.
  • Represent UL at industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
  • Successfully executes complex project issues with limited guidance.
  • Applies a strategic approach to project and initiative management.
  • Significantly contributes to complex special assignments at the direction of Standards Management.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor of Science (preferably Master of Science) degree in Engineering is required in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or similar with a minimum of 5 years of engineering experience.
  • Experience with batteries and energy storage systems desired.
  • Experience working with lithium-ion cells and batteries or other forms of energy or demonstrated knowledge and experience creating software solutions.
  • Technical experience in applying and interpreting standards requirements.  
  • Demonstrated experience with US and Canadian Standards and Codes, as well as national, regional, and international standardization bodies.
  • Desired knowledge in relevant UL, ASTM, NFPA, CSA, and IEC standards.
  • Includes the ability to apply these standards/documents to new and innovative products.
  • Ability to understand and effectively communicate technical information with industry and other stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in interpreting, supporting, and executing directives under minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiencies in common business applications (Word-processing, spreadsheets, presentations).
  • Employs excellent verbal and written communication skills and demonstrates the ability to relate effectively to others.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and time management skills.
