We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Web Developer at Underwriters Laboratories.


The Senior Web Developer is responsible for developing custom features on Underwriters Laboratories, quickly expanding web properties, and using Drupal and WordPress CMS on the organization’s Pantheon WebOps platform. This individual will also assist with web infrastructure tasks, liaison with partners, and internal focus area teams. Reporting to the Infrastructure Management Lead on the Strategic Communications team, this position is expected to take ownership of the website's code development and future functionality.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the Senior Web Developer, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Plans, develops and maintains UI/UX code customizations across all environments
  • Plans, develops, and maintains custom modules for Drupal and WordPress websites on Underwriters Laboratories' Pantheon WebOps platform. The custom modules primarily focus on functionality extensions for a website
  • Works with the Web Content Strategist and Infrastructure Management Lead in planning new features, providing technical details, options, and level of effort estimates. Occasionally asked to assist in maintaining DevOps systems to support code deployments, synchronization to lower environments, and automated testing on the Pantheon WebOps environment.
  • Supports the content entry and QA teams to ensure the proper functioning of the content syndication framework between sites.
  • Facilitates with various Shared Service IT teams for web infrastructure tasks (DNS requests, Domain procurement, SSL certificates, etc.)
  • Participates in process improvement activities
  • Maintains technical documentation

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty at a consistent, high-quality level. The requirements listed below represent the knowledge, skill, and ability required. 

  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in corporate or nonprofit settings
  • Self-driven and resourceful to achieve goals independently and able to work well in groups
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results when coding UI/UX customizations and custom modules on large-scale Drupal and WordPress projects
  • Proven technical expertise in source control workflow tools (e.g., GitHub)
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot complex functionality, UI/UX, and operational issues within a website.
  • Flexibility to adjust and thrive in an environment with changing requirements, schedules, and priorities for multiple projects or assignments
  • Understanding of developing a multisite installation
  • Strong analytical, project planning, and organizational skills in a fast-paced, matrixed environment
  • Proactively raises concerns regarding possible project management roadblocks and provides solutions
  • Able to socialize ideas, make recommendations and convey information to stakeholders of varying technical proficiency
  • Strong interpersonal skills - ability to establish and sustain working relationships across teams and with key senior stakeholders
  • Manage or execute a variety of prominent, time-sensitive, and complex initiatives independently and/or in a team environment
  • Strong attention to detail


 Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Experience with test-driven development necessary
  • Experience with performance and/or security testing required
  • Experience with (ideally) Cloudflare CDN & Fastly CDN (CDN of some sort)
  • Knowledge of Git workflows
  • Experience with DevOps infrastructure
  • Experience working with JavaScript
  • Experience working with and managing third-party vendors
  • Experience designing SharePoint platforms a plus
