We have an exciting opportunity for a Public Relations Manager at Underwriters Laboratories. The Public Relations (PR) Manager will help develop and manage public relations strategy, handle issues management and respond to crisis communications quickly and tactfully. The role will collaborate effectively as a strategic partner to cross-functional teams and be asked to cultivate relationships with journalists and thought leaders within the nonprofit/NGO/science, research and safety sectors.  

The PR Manager creates and executes a media/public affairs function, including public relations and social media alignment within a broader strategic communications framework that supports the mission, strategic priorities and goals of Underwriters Laboratories Inc. The role will be part of a broader communications group whose role is to help Underwriters Laboratories enhance its reputation, amplify research findings, and nurture key internal and external relationships.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

As the PR Manager, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of Underwriters Laboratories as you:

  • Serve as primary point of contact for communicating with the media, field incoming media inquiries, develop media contacts in print, television, radio and other industry and community influencers important to the organization’s mission.
  • Develop and implement a pro-active media and public relations communication plan over the short- and long-term, including outreach tactics for critical internal and external stakeholders which may include the larger Communications team, internal departments, and external agencies.
  • Handle/support/implement public relations response to crisis communications.
  • Maintain communication guidelines, processes, resources and governance frameworks to ensure high-quality, aligned, and brand compliant communication are delivered externally.
  • Write, review and track all press releases, media pitches, statements, FAQ documents and other press materials for quality. Write and approve digital content for our social media outlets, including regular posts on LinkedIn.
  • Establish a process, clear guidelines and governance for speaking with the media, determine a spokesperson and clarify messaging, and brief spokespeople within the organization on communicating with the media and ensure all leadership have media training.
  • Communicate major industry developments, develop campaigns, and other external communications, and facilitate executive speaking opportunities and thought leadership programs.
  • Ensure alignment with employee messages, support other communications initiatives with media relations and help organize promotional events and supervise film or multi-media productions.

  • Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to write compelling copy while being a sophisticated storyteller who can help translate safety science research and convince stakeholder audiences are a must.
  • Ability to effectively work within a matrixed framework, while being flexible, collaborative and deadline-driven.
  • Good decision-making and strong interpersonal skills, developing relationships with media representatives, handling difficult situations, and advising people effectively within the organization.
  • Team player that values co-operation and collaboration across different functions in the organization.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, ability to manage multiple projects at once, maintain status updates (internal and external) to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems and recommend solutions.
  • Creative self-starter and life-long learner open to new ideas and new ways of working that is able to work with minimal supervision in a challenging, fast-paced technical environment.
  • Ability to influence without authority and motivate others toward common objectives.

 Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Journalism, English/American Literature, Communications or related field required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 10+ years of public relations experience working closely with the media, global PR firms and other PR-related vendors, preferably in a corporate environment.
  • Crisis and issues management experience.
  • Experience developing and delivering media relations strategies, message development and message distribution via myriad channels.
  • Experience working closely with journalists, dealing with reporters, and responding to media requests.  
  • Experience supporting and counseling senior-level executives.
  • Experience at leveraging digital as well as traditional media.
