What you’ll learn & achieve:

As a member of the Legal team, the Corporate Counsel – Employment and Litigation (CC) is a core member of UL Inc.’s legal function. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Litigation and Disputes (ACG), the CC will work closely with Human Resources (HR) and with other business leaders to coordinate and assist on the following matters within the Chief Legal Office (CLO).


Job responsibilities:

  • Assist in the representation of the company in a variety of employee-related matters, which may include worker’s compensation, termination of employment, sexual harassment, employee agreements, workplace safety, wage and overtime standards, privacy rights, discrimination and employee benefits.
  • Assist in the coordination of legal advice to HR on US laws and regulations and local laws outside the US relating to employee-related matters including workplace policies and procedures that are in compliance with country, federal, state and local employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, Occupation Health and Safety Act, Family Medical Leave Act, worker’s compensation law, and related areas.
  • Advise HR in creating and maintaining workplace policies and procedures that are in compliance with country, federal, state and local employment laws including the Fair Labor Standards Act, Occupation Health and Safety Act, Family Medical Leave Act, worker’s compensation law, and related areas.
  • Assist in the representation of the company in other commercial litigation and disputes and develop recommendations for the most effective strategy for defense or prosecution in litigation.
  • Manage docket of potential and active litigation matters for the company and of CLO personnel in litigation and dispute areas including paralegal support.
  • Support the preparation of company staff for legal proceedings, depositions and trial, and represent the company at EEOC hearings, trials, mediations, arbitrations and depositions.
  • Coordinate on the management external counsel, as necessary, in a cost-effective manner and in accordance with CLO Billing guidelines.
  • Coordinate third-party vendors retained by UL on any litigation or dispute matters.
  • Perform other legal duties as directed by the ACG or other CLO leadership.

What makes you a great fit:

  • JD degree and a minimum of 3-5 years relevant experience in a law firm or corporate legal department
  • Bar admission in good standing  
  • In-depth knowledge of employment and labor laws and regulations 
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills and excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to use sound judgment, provide guidance, and make key decisions in a demanding and fast-paced environment
  • Ability to contribute as a team player and work collaboratively with colleagues, clients, and business leaders to fulfill and advance company strategy
  • Ability to multi-task and organize workflow independently in response to the company's strategic priorities and objectives
  • Willingness to travel
