What you’ll learn & achieve:

This opportunity is with UL's R&D and External Science organization, which uses science and its interdisciplinary technical teams to serve UL's customer needs. The current role adds to the Electrical & Mechanical R&D team to add needed expertise in insulation materials, dielectrics, and other electronic properties of materials. The successful candidate will be comfortable with both theoretical principals as well as hands-on experimental work in a laboratory environment. The position will require regular interaction with technical and business leadership across UL's business units globally. R&D staff are encouraged to present their technical results both internally and at technical symposium, as well as publish in journals. Project responsibilities will prioritize solving technical issues from UL's business operations and their customers, including leading customer projects, business development efforts, and the development of new service offerings that will be transferred into operations.


Initiates, directs and executes high-level engineering research practices that include design, product characteristics, and testing standards. Conducts studies and analysis to determine the feasibility of various engineering approaches. Develops concepts and criteria to resolve major problems in current programs or approaches. Serves as the primary source for fundamental engineering research, and acts as an in-house and outside consultant. Plans and conducts experiments to measure the body of scientific knowledge on topics related to hazard based safety engineering. Projects require broad, extensive knowledge of state-of-the-art engineering principals and theories, and uses professional concepts and procedures to solve a wide range of research based problems.

  • Identifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of the aligned categories.
  • Applies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methods.
  • Analyzes product data and laboratory test results in order to determine causes of problems and develop solutions, and evaluates technical specifications and factors related to process or design objectives.
  • Stays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, attending academic conferences, writing and collaborating on original publications, and delivering presentations on research engineering topics.
  • Plan, design and complete initial and follow-up procedures as needed to test and validate results.
  • Collaborates with industry, academics and other research and development staff to apply the results of research used to develop new techniques, products, practices and UL Standards.
  • Maintain and develop extensive knowledge of current and new technologies for new products, as well as current needs and trends.
  • Performs other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

Advanced degree required in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or closely related field (Masters, PhD, or equivalent degree that includes graduate education), with extensive experience in dielectric materials, electronic properties of materials, insulators, quantum physical properties of materials, electronic devices, etc.

  • Demonstrated general knowledge of engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain engineering based academic and applied knowledge and skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with Research Scientists and other team members to complete a project from start to finish.
  • Excellent communication skills required, including both written and oral/presentation skills to a both technical and non-technical audiences.

The successful candidate is expected to maintain a professional network both inside and outside UL. Must be comfortable with working with this network to identify new project work and emerging trends.
