At UL Identity Management & Security (IMS) we aim to make the cyber world more secure. We work with our customers to test, validate/verify, certify, and advise on the functional security and non-functional cybersecurity of their products, systems, and ecosystems. We make sure the security functions of products and systems work as they should, and we help customers test their connected technologies for hackability. Through our creation of cybersecurity frameworks and standards, we help our customers define and implement their security strategies.


As UL's footprint continues to grow, we are looking for a Hardware Engineer to join our global technology team based from our office in Leiden, Netherlands. You can also be based in our Edinburgh, Dublin, Sao Paulo, or Atlanta office.


Our team consists of a unique combination of engineers, scientists and hackers working on software and hardware, which is used to ensure the security and interoperability within the world of electronic transactions, including the latest mobile payment solutions and modern transit payment systems. Apart from developing software and hardware, the team also delivers technical advisory to customers worldwide. Our tools, consisting of desktop, web-based and mobile software and specialized hardware, are used by major payment industry players in order to test systems and devices such as data processing systems, mobile devices, point-of-sale terminals, ATMs and SIM cards.


As a Hardware Engineer you will join one of our Scrum Teams to maintain and develop a portfolio of payment technology related test tools. You will work closely with the software engineers and technical analysts in your team. Together with the team, you will be involved in the full development cycle of electronic products, ranging from a complete new design and implementation to expanding functionalities on existing products. You will develop firmware and provide quick resolutions to problems customers may encounter, as well as oversee the production of the hardware portfolio.


In this hands-on role, you will be part of a dynamic and international development team, using cutting edge technology to develop an advanced portfolio of platforms for major payment and security industry players.

What you’ll learn & achieve:

  • Create technical design and develop hardware products and components
  • Expand functionalities of existing products
  • Write embedded firmware
  • Manage hardware production, interact with suppliers, oversee stock replenishment
  • Provide services to our customers through product support, advice and resolution
  • Contribute to integration of hardware products in software solutions
  • Participate in a Scrum Team
  • Contribute to a sustainable long term technology strategy by suggesting and implementing improvements and performing trade-off analysis

What makes you a great fit:

  • Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or similar
  • Proven experience in hardware development and PCB design
  • Experience in C and embedded software development
  • Experience with VHDL is a plus
  • Experience with enclosure design is a plus
  • Experience with creating drivers and integrating hardware into a software solution is a plus
  • Analytical, technical, attentive to detail, customer focused, communicative, result driven, team player, eager to learn, ambitious, creative and entrepreneurial skills
  • A drive to deliver state-of-the-art products
  • A drive to provide correct and definitive answersAbility to work well in an international environment
  • Good communication skills and able to self-organize
  • Proficiency in speaking and writing English. Proficiency in Dutch is a plus
