    CBD Technical Manager - Subject Matter Expert – Consumer & Retail Services (CRS) 


    Under minimal supervision, leads global strategy, approach and implementation of services related to a specific Consumer & Retail Services (CRS) industry or line-of-business.  Serves as the global technical and market expert; drives both commercial growth and internal technical governance.  Supports strategic selling opportunities by leveraging industry relationships and providing technical expertise and advice during the sales process.  Leads the development of new services, technologies and market expansion in alignment with strategic goals and growth objectives for industry or line-of-business as well as the overall CRS Division.


    Governs global interpretation, application and harmonization of compliance requirements, protocols, and methods across UL’s global laboratory and/or field services network related to their area of expertise. Represents UL in key industry associations, organizations, standards bodies and regulatory agencies to provide technical advice and elevate UL’s thought leadership in the market.


    1. Governs the interpretation, application and uniformity of technical methods, techniques and requirements applied in testing, audits and/or inspections. Develops guidelines, procedures and programs for internal operational adherence.
    2. Identifies new industry-related business opportunities for UL and provides analyses and recommendations for organic and inorganic commercial expansion. Leverages industry contacts to create commercial leads/opportunities and helps identify strategic growth opportunities for their assigned line of business (industry) and lead project-based work to implement, including at times helping to close critical RFPs and actively participating in client “pitches”.  Assists in developing industry/discipline specific strategic plans, goals, and budgets for the
    3. Drives continual improvement in company execution of internal and external processes. Leads the development of new products and services related to area of expertise.
    4. Works closely with Regional leadership teams and Divisional Sales leadership teams in the development of global account strategies, goals and plans to generate sustainable revenue & margin growth. Supports strategic selling opportunities by leveraging industry relationships and providing technical expertise and advice during the sales process.
    5. Represents UL at meetings of outside organizations; providing expert advice to influence industry approaches and elevate UL’s thought leadership in the market.
    6. Develops a high performing team by managing the performance and development of team members, ensuring ongoing training, career counseling, feedback, and guidance to drive high performance and morale. Maintains team contingency and succession plans and develops team performance measures and goals and drives accountabilities in support of the global vision and goals.   
    7. Performs other duties as directed.


    • University degree (Equivalent to a U.S. Bachelor’s degree) in Business Administration or a related field plus generally eight to ten (8-10) years of related experience with gradually increasing responsibilities, including strong leadership skills.
    • Demonstrated abilities in leading and engaging teams (track record of being a solid coach, mentor, and developer of talent), field operations management, strategic planning, risk management, change management, and project management.
    • In-depth understanding of field operations management best practices, including quality management systems, financial management, training systems, and leveraging enabling operational technologies.
    • Strong financial and business acumen required as well as excellent judgment, strong analytical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
    • Self-motivated individual with excellent time management and organizational skills.
    • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and relationship building skills to build consensus, achieve business results and promote organizational success.
    • Ability to coach and mentor team members to function as one team and develop individually.
    • Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a diverse group of auditors, client services, technical team, support services operations resources, clients, and internal colleagues.
    • Ability to drive big picture goals and milestones while valuing and maintaining strong attention to detail.
    • Ability to quickly identify and drive to the optimal solution when presented with a series of constraints
    • Demonstrated ability to assist in developing and implementing strategies, to build business plans when and where necessary and to facilitate meetings, negotiate and influence outcomes.
    • Strong program/project management and leadership skills required to help manage multiple projects as needed.
    • Strong technical understanding of the applicable industry codes, regulations, standards, service/product lines and target markets; demonstrated history of strong technical judgment.
    • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions to resolve problems.
    • Self-starter with the ability to work autonomously, on a team, and within a global matrix environment.
    • Ability to present complex and highly technical information in a straightforward manner; influencing others towards divisional goals and objectives.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and detail orientated.
