    UL is seeking a Facilities Technician to join our Facilities team in Northbrook, IL.


    The Facilities Technician is a critical member of UL’s Facilities & Real Estate team. Under the general supervision of the Facilities Manager, the Facilities Technician will take a lead role in safely maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing UL’s lighting and electrical distribution systems and equipment. The individual must also be willing to perform maintenance tasks for UL’s unique infrastructure as part of a team.


    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

    • Primary responsibility: Oversee, maintain, and control the daily operations of electrical distribution systems and controls from switchyard to operating equipment following all codes, standards, and trade precautions/safety procedures;
    • Provide preventive and predictive maintenance of the electrical systems, conducting daily rounds and readings;
    • Coordinate and conduct annual preventative maintenance on electrical systems such as: infrared/thermal imaging, transformer testing, emergency generators, transfer switches, etc;
    • Lead successful installation and repair of electrical systems and wiring including but not limited to: power distribution systems, LED & fluorescent lighting systems, control panels, BAS controls, components of machinery and equipment, data wiring, etc.;
    • Work with external agencies and programs to collect rebates or other available monies when updating inefficient systems;
    • Work with established electrical contractors to perform work that is outside the capabilities of the team;
    • Develop and maintain necessary inventories of electrical materials;
    • Coordinate projects with multiple trades while maintaining project schedules and budgets;
    • Perform and/or completes all service requests accurately and expediently;
    • Evaluate building systems and controls to monitor and improve performance and operating efficiencies;
    • Comply with all policies and procedures established for the property;
    • Respond to after-hours calls within two hours, and keeps company-issued phone on at all times;
    • Actively participate in emergency response procedures, technical and safety training programs;
    • Perform all work using the proper safety equipment and in a safe manner. Report safety issues to supervisor;
    • Complete all required training and safety programs;
    • Track and report time worked in accordance with account policies and procedures;
    • Comply with all purchasing and receiving policies and procedures;
    • Report property issues that are not within direct responsibility to supervisor or call center team;
    • Special projects and other functions as required by manager or client.
    • Occasional snow removal operations.

    This role is located in Northbrook, IL and reports to the Program/Project Manager.


    To succeed in this role, you should have High school diploma or GED plus generally 5-7 years of hands-on commercial or industrial electrical experience.

    • Ability to read electrical schematics, electrical prints, wiring diagrams, and nameplates
    • Ability to troubleshoot variable frequency drives (VFD) drives and controls
    • Knowledge of single phase and three phase AC circuits up to 480 volts
    • Ability to size, layout, run, bend, and install electrical conduits (rigid and EMT) up to 2”
    • Ability to properly size, pull, and terminate electrical wiring
    • Strong understanding of local codes and ordinances
    • Ability to troubleshoot controls and electrical systems with amp meters, voltmeters, tracers, and recording devices
    • Knowledge of building automation and fire life safety systems
    • Good interpersonal skills and a positive team attitude
    • Ability to safely work independently
    • Ability to occasionally work long hours and some weekends
    • Familiarity with computers and operations and office automation applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)
    • Strong customer service orientation
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk long distances to cover property portfolio
    • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
    • Ability to climb exterior ladders and/or use boom lifts at extended heights.
    • Able and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time
    • Ability to travel, on occasion, to other facilities within the UL family of companies when the need arises
    • Ability to wear proper PPE, specifically half-mask respirators, where/when necessary
    • Demonstrated consistency in values, principles and work ethic
    • Understanding of and commitment to client service
    • A desire to work within a diverse, collaborative, and driven professional environment
    • Excellent attention to detail and consistency
    • Valid driver’s license
