    UL is seeking is seeking an intern to assist with UL FSRI projects at the direction of fire protection engineers and project managers.

     

    UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (FSRI) advances fire research knowledge and develops cutting edge, practical fire service education aimed at helping firefighters stay safe while more effectively protecting people and property.

    JOB FUNCTION:

    Under specific direction from research engineers, assists in researching, setting up, fabricating & installing instrumentation, assist in the conduct of experiments, gathering & processing data, developing and preparing graphs and illustrations for reports. Works closely with research engineers and scientists to ensure that all processes are accurate and technically sound.

    Responsibilities

    • Assists in identifying fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s industry and standards position and support the strategy of the aligned categories.
    • Document laboratory procedures, contribute to the preparation of detailed reports, and assess specifications and factors related to the process or design objectives.
    • Become familiar with & assist the deployment of hardware and equipment needed for operations, and equipment for general lab and study specific use.
    • Assist in the gathering of initial data for projects, and works with Research Engineers and Scientists to evaluate the feasibility of new product testing Standards by applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems
    • Performs other duties as directed.

    Qualifications

    • Some University education in Engineering.
    • No other work experience required, but previous Laboratory/Engineering internship helpful.
    • Ability to compose routine reports and business correspondence. Ability to present standard information and respond to questions from individuals or small groups of internal or external clients.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operations, maintenance and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to understand and follow detailed written and/or oral instructions and to resolve problems involving a few variables in standardized situations where specific decision-making guidelines exist.
    • Ability to work with computers, email, word documents, and spreadsheets.
