    Location Flexible, although preferred in areas with significant LPS activity. 

     

    Independently manages execution and timely completion of assigned work orders and other Inspection Cost projects by analyzing scope, determining requirements and evaluating complex products and systems to establish requirements and prepare reports. Maintains the integrity of the UL Mark by conducting various product, device, process, system and material inspections at various site and factory locations to ensure they are produced and marked in compliance with various applicable technical requirements. Trains and evaluates the readiness and competency of other field representatives. Assists in the promotion, marketing and selling of new and existing UL services. Maybe involved in creating a new process or curriculum to develop or improve Technical Requirements for New or Unique Processes. Also, involved in teaching, developing or facilitating Technical courses related to UL Standards and /or New Processes. Works with internal and external customers to resolve technical and administrative issues.

    Responsibilities

    • Performs LPS Inspections and evaluations:
      • Independently perform evaluations of installed Lightning Protection Systems, non-safety certification inspections and field evaluations in accordance with the required performance standards and requirements.
      • Uses technical judgment to determine the severity and impact of noncompliance variations with applicable standards and UL Lightning Protection System Program requirements.  
      • May audit customer quality management/assurance programs.
      • Evaluates and facilitates options for corrective action where variations from UL requirements are noted.
    • Promotes consistency in delivery of LPS services through the following:
      • Participates in LPS DFE Team
      • Contributes to technical interpretations and application
      • Develops and delivers training content, whether classroom instructor lead, one-on-one field based training, or through on-line methods.
      • Delivers training to clients and / or UL Field Engineers in classroom or field environments
      • Performs mentoring and qualification visits with Field Engineering team members that support the LPS program
    • New business Growth:
      • Contributes to the development and deployment of new services for LPS
      • Working with marketing and sales as needed, and potential for participation in tradeshows or technical conferences to help promote the business
    • Technical Acumen
      • Knowledge of Construction Industry
      • Familiarity with building construction techniques, practices
      • Understands various structure types
      • Ability to interpret blueprints and architectural drawings and specifications
    • Test Equipment: Ability to use or oversee use of Inspection, Measuring, and Test Equipment (IMTE) to perform inspections, such as micrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, and other UL supplied equipment.
      • Observes the use of manufacturer's equipment necessary to meet UL requirements.
      • Confirms the proper calibration of manufacturers' measuring equipment and may perform calibration of UL supplied equipment.
    • Knowledge of standards:
      • In-depth Knowledge of Lightning Protection component and system related standards, including but not limited to the following:
      • UL 96
      • UL96A
      • NFPA 780
      • IEC 62305 (optional)
    • Communication Skills: Demonstrates effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of Lightning Protection System stakeholders, including but not limited to the following constituents:
      • Lightning Protection System Installers
      • Electrical Contractors
      • General Contractors
      • Architects, Engineers
      • Building Owners
      • Authorities Having Jurisdiction including local, state, or federal building inspectors
      • UL PDE
      • UL Engineering Teams
      • UL Certification Program Office
      • UL Field Engineering Program team members and
    • Documents examination, variations and test results to appropriate UL forms. Maintains logs for scheduling inspections, time and expenses. Performs various calculations in more than one specific engineering field such as electrical, mechanical, chemical, or fire protection.
    • Participates in proposing and implementing revisions to UL documentation. For example: Policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Work Instructions, Customer Facing Documents (CFDs), Subject Bulletins s the Field Services Manual. Reviews and submits comments on the new Follow-Up Services programs. Coordinates with other UL staff on conducting the field portion of File Reviews.

    Qualifications

    • University Degree or equivalent Technical Certificate in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program and eight years directly related experience. Fluency in English is required.
    • Detailed knowledge of third party certification inspection process.
    • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
    • Heavy OVERNIGHT travel is required - own transportation is needed (mileage reimbursement). 
    • Able to travel internationally if needed
    • U.S. Citizenship required 
    • General Skills:
      • Must NOT be afraid of heights / able to work in outdoor environments at elevations
      • Able to physically climb ladders and reach access points on structures to confirm compliance with requirements
      • Resolves process, management system and engineering issues associated with Non-compliances by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
      • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
      • May participate in reviewing the work of other staff.
      • May participate in reviewing and interpreting quality assurance program requirements to assist in implementation of alternate quality-based inspection programs.
      • Performs other duties as directed.
      • Demonstrated ability to identify and manage priorities
