    Responsibilities

    EUropean Technical Lead

    1.   Overall Roles

    A. To provide a strategic lead on technical matters concerning Fire Resistance from a European perspective at a senior level within BLST (BMS) Division.

    B.  To provide technical support to complete projects directly for UL customers (~40% of available working time).

     

    2.   Ownership of technical aspects for the following Specific areas

    A. Steelwork protection for fire performance encompassing:

                         i. ‘Environmental’ protection

                       ii.  Oil and gas applications

    B. Ducts and Dampers

    C. Firestopping (in cooperation with existing staff)

    D. Walls and partitions (in cooperation with existing staff)

    E. Floors and ceilings

    F.  Others (to be added)

     

    NOTE: The relevant Engineering Lead/Manager will have direct responsibility for all technical staff

     

    3.   Business Growth

    A. Develop the above business in specific markets:

                         i. Europe

                       ii.  China (and Far East)

                     iii.  UK

    B. Support local UL Sales staff

    C. Responsible for short and long term technical team growth and talent acquisition management (starting with structural fire team and extending to other strategic technical areas).

    D. Strong customer acquisition and increased market share.

    E. Enhance UL representation (through development of new representatives where possible) in relevant standardisation committees/industry associations etc, as agreed at a strategic level in support of the business plan.

    F. Develop and strengthen UL’s global technical leadership position in relevant subjects (with core focus on fire safety in buildings)

    G. Lead and develop divisional technical development strategy to support organic growth and profitability, with short and long term focus.

    H. Develop proposals for M&A and other inorganic growth activities, from business and technical development perspective supporting the local business managers.

    I.  Strategic technical, research & development projects and CapEx investments identification and management, to extend the service scope and to support marketing activities

    5.   Training

    A.  Development of the staff from a technical perspective and with a long-term, career development perspective in the subjects noted in Section 2 above.

                         i.  This will include development of technical career plans and training modules from various sources

    6.   Key Aims:

    A.  Development of technical capabilities of the UL European team.

    B.  Development of UL’s Technical presence with key industry stakeholders and associations. List of key associations to be developed

    C. Oversee scheme development from a technical aspect in any new areas.

    D.  Assist managers with Conformity Assessment Services in assigned specialised areas (likely all fire related) by providing technical expertise in equipment and standards within broad product classifications.

    E.  Provide expert advice in all technical areas of all product categories.

    F.  Represent UL on technical committees of national and/or international organizations.

    G. Provide leadership, technical advice and counsel to other professionals. Specific committees to be agreed to avoid duplication and non-beneficial activities.

    7.   Other

    A. Performs special projects as directed.

     

    Qualifications

    Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET accredited program plus directly related work experience. Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline. Working knowledge of conformity standards in use in areas of expertise. Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in areas of expertise, including application to complex, new, or unusual products. Working knowledge of industry issues, needs, and problems.
