    For our Field Engineering Mid Atlantic Team, we are looking for an Associate Field Engineer. Candidate must be in or willing to relocate to Roanoke, VA.


    Your challenge:

    Under general supervision, the Associate Field Engineer within Field Engineering independently executes the timely completion of assigned work orders and other Area projects by conducting inspections on products, processes, systems and materials at various manufacturing locations in the region that have obtained a UL certificate. Ensuring that all clients are using the UL Brand in compliance with the applicable technical requirements is one of your main tasks.


    What you get to do:

    • Independently conduct safety and non-safety certification inspections in accordance with the required performance standards and requirements.
    • Witness testing, including interpretation and analysis of the test results against applicable requirements.
    • Use technical judgment to determine whether noncompliance variations compromise the continued application of the UL Mark and may determine if alternative is acceptable. May conduct quality audits at customer sites.
    • Independently perform inspections of fire apparatus in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements. Work includes evaluations of fire apparatus using NDT testing methods including magnetic particle, visual, ultrasound, and liquid penetrant.
    • Independently perform inspections of fire apparatus sub-components (i.e. welded components) in accordance with applicable American Welding Society (AWS) requirements.
    • Verify the accuracy of manufacturers' measuring equipment and reviewing production and inspection records.
    • Communicate with manufacturers and customers, Authorities Having Jurisdiction and others to conduct non-safety and safety certification inspections. Investigates the misuse of UL Mark. Provide general information on policies and procedures for the varied UL services along with promoting and explaining the benefits of new and existing services. Discusses procedures, test methods, test results, sample selection and variations in products, devices, processes, systems and materials as necessary to resolve problems, implement changes to existing requirements or help develop new requirements.
    • Use instruments to perform inspections, such as micrometers, voltmeters, ammeters, and other UL supplied equipment such as magnetic particle contour probe or ultrasonic flaw detector. Observes use of manufacturer's equipment necessary to meet UL requirements. Confirms proper calibration of manufacturer's measuring equipment and may perform calibration of UL supplied equipment.
    • Document examination, variations and test results to appropriate UL forms.
    • Cooperate with other departments within the UL organization for the successful completion of projects and assigned tasks
    • Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
    • Perform other duties as directed.


    We are looking for:

    • Minimum 2-year Technical Degree plus generally two years of related experience. Associate Degree in Non-Destructive Testing strongly preferred
    • Non-destructive testing (NDT) experience preferred. Certification in CP 189 or SNT-TC-1A, ASNT Level II Certification in MT, VT, UT and/or PT a plus
    • Candidate must be in or willing to relocate to Roanoke, VA
    • Strong electronics background, and general mechanical and technical aptitude with the ability to read and interpret schematic diagrams
    • Experience in Field Engineering, Compliance, Auditing or Quality Engineering a plus
    • Valid driver’s license with reliable transportation each day to/from assigned work
    • Candidate must meet vision requirements as listed in ASNT CP 189
    • Ability to work in confined spaces, elevated spaces, and must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. without assistance
    • Ability to bring together resources and understand client business needs
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, and client-interfacing skills
    • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Suite of services, Office 365 and Windows 8.1 and 10. Ability to work remotely with a laptop and smartphone (documentation and reporting are performed digitally)
    • Strong collaboration skills
    • Ability to travel locally and regionally, and work remotely. Travel requirements are generally for local travel within a set radius of home location. Travel outside Area is expected on occasion for training, meetings, and additional support of workload in other territories.
